Handheld thermal imaging cameras are widely used in trade professions, as well as by firefighters and those in agriculture. They can also be used to help detect some medical issues, though they cannot be solely relied upon for a diagnosis.
If you’re looking to invest, we’ve rounded up a list of stores with thermal imaging cameras in stock below so that you can compare prices.
While thermal imaging cameras are made to detect small deviations in the surface temperature of both people and objects, they are not made to be medical devices. This means that they cannot be solely relied upon to detect or diagnose fevers or viruses such as COVID-19.
However, FLIR, a manufacturer of thermal imaging cameras, has said that “Although no thermal cameras can detect or diagnose the coronavirus, FLIR cameras can be used as an adjunct to other body temperature screening tools for detecting elevated skin temperature in high-traffic public places through quick individual screening.”
For this reason, the cameras have been used in public spaces such as airports, businesses and factories as a way to identify individuals with Elevated Body Temperature (EBT).
You can see more on how to use thermal imaging cameras to detect EBT below:
Although both thermal imaging cameras and infrared thermometers are non-contact temperature measuring devices, they are different products.
An infrared thermometer can only show you the temperature of the single spot that you are pointing it at, making it handy for spot-checking.
Meanwhile, a thermal imaging camera can give you an image with the thermal spectrum displayed on it. It can also generally read temperatures from further distances, making it better suited for inspecting larger areas in one go.
