What is a menstrual cup?

Menstrual cups are reusable products designed to catch menstrual fluid rather than absorb it. They are typically able to be worn for 8-12 hours, making them more convenient than tampons and sanitary pads, which need to be changed more frequently.

Menstrual cups are also more eco-friendly and cost-effective than other feminine care products as they are able to be washed and reused.

If you're looking for more information on how to choose the best menstrual cup, check out our best menstrual cups guide.

How to insert a menstrual cup

While menstrual cups can look quite daunting, they are able to be worn by most women. They typically come in two sizes, with the smaller size suited to women who have not given birth naturally before.

Menstrual cups are bell-shaped, making them easy to place inside the vaginal cavity. To use a menstrual cup, first, wash your hands and then fold the cup before gently inserting it into the entrance of the vagina.

Once inserted, the cup will pop open to its full size.

How to remove and clean a menstrual cup

To remove your cup, wash your hands and then gently pull on the stem of the cup until you can reach the base. Pinch as far up the cup as you can and squeeze to release the suction seal.

You should then be able to slowly remove the cup. Once removed, empty it into the toilet and rinse under cold water, followed by warm water.

If you are not able to use water (such as when in a public restroom), thoroughly wipe the cup with toilet paper before reinserting it and wash it as soon as you are able to.
