Movie theatre company AMC Entertainment (AMC) has seen its stock price jump more than 300% since the end of May.

AMC has become what is known as a "meme stock", a phenomenon where its stock price is heavily influenced by social sentiment, celebrities or influencers rather than company performance. Despite its price rise, AMC was one of the most shorted stocks in the United States thanks to plunging profits amid the pandemic.

Between January and February 2021, AMC stocks became highly volatile when the company found itself caught up in an unprecedented social media frenzy that started with GameStop (GME). Inspired Reddit members set on a mission to drive up the price of stocks that had been deliberately shorted by big-time investors.

However, in a controversial move, several platforms halted or restricted trading across a number of stocks including AMC. Unsurprisingly, this sent prices plummeting.

AMC Entertainment Holdings, Inc (AMC) is a leading entertainment business with stocks listed in the US. It opened the day at US$44.68 after a previous close of US$42.81. During the day the price has varied from a low of USD42.01 to a high of USD49.6. The latest price was USD49.4 (25 minute delay). AMC Entertainment is listed on the NYSE. All prices are listed in US Dollars.

Shorting AMC Entertainment shares

There are currently 102.3 million AMC Entertainment shares held short by investors – that's known as AMC Entertainment's "short interest". This figure is 16.8% up from 87.6 million last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting AMC Entertainment shares can be evaluated.

AMC Entertainment's "short interest ratio" (SIR)

AMC Entertainment's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of AMC Entertainment shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of AMC Entertainment shares traded daily (recently around 152.7 million). AMC Entertainment's SIR currently stands at 0.67. In other words for every 100,000 AMC Entertainment shares traded daily on the market, roughly 670 shares are currently held short.

However AMC Entertainment's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of AMC Entertainment shares, or, against the total number of tradable AMC Entertainment shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case AMC Entertainment's short interest could be expressed as 0.23% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 AMC Entertainment shares in existence, roughly 230 shares are currently held short) or 0.2285% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable AMC Entertainment shares, roughly 229 shares are currently held short).

Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against AMC Entertainment.

AMC Entertainment share price volatility

Over the last 12 months, AMC Entertainment's shares have ranged in value from as little as US$1.91 up to US$72.62. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".

AMC.US volatility(beta: 1.27)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NYSE average) beta is 1, while AMC Entertainment's is 1.2652. This would suggest that AMC Entertainment's shares are more volatile than the average for this exchange and represent, relatively-speaking, a higher risk (but potentially also market-beating returns).
