How to buy AMC Entertainment (AMC) shares in Australia

Learn how to easily invest in AMC Entertainment shares.

Movie theatre company AMC Entertainment (AMC) has seen its stock price jump more than 300% since the end of May.

AMC has become what is known as a "meme stock", a phenomenon where its stock price is heavily influenced by social sentiment, celebrities or influencers rather than company performance. Despite its price rise, AMC was one of the most shorted stocks in the United States thanks to plunging profits amid the pandemic.

Between January and February 2021, AMC stocks became highly volatile when the company found itself caught up in an unprecedented social media frenzy that started with GameStop (GME). Inspired Reddit members set on a mission to drive up the price of stocks that had been deliberately shorted by big-time investors.

However, in a controversial move, several platforms halted or restricted trading across a number of stocks including AMC. Unsurprisingly, this sent prices plummeting.

AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC) owns theatres both in the United States and internationally. The company was created in 1920 and is based in Kansas, United States. After being heavily shorted in early 2021, the stock surged more than 2,000% after it became the target of users on the Reddit forum WallStreetBets.

How to buy shares in AMC Entertainment

  2. Open and fund your brokerage account. Complete an application with your personal and financial details, which will typically include your ID and tax file number. Fund your account with a bank transfer, credit card or debit card.

Have AMC Entertainment's shares ever split?

AMC Entertainment's shares were split on a 1:10 basis on 24 August 2023. So if you had owned 10 shares the day before the split, the next day you would own 1 share. This wouldn't directly have changed the overall worth of your AMC Entertainment shares – just the quantity. However, indirectly, the new 900% higher share price could have impacted the market appetite for AMC Entertainment shares which in turn could have impacted AMC Entertainment's share price.

Is AMC Entertainment under- or over-valued?

Valuing AMC Entertainment stock is incredibly difficult, and any metric has to be viewed as part of a bigger picture of AMC Entertainment's overall performance. However, analysts commonly use some key metrics to help gauge the value of a stock.

AMC Entertainment's PEG ratio

AMC Entertainment's "price/earnings-to-growth ratio" can be calculated by dividing its P/E ratio by its growth – to give 1.42. A low ratio can be interpreted as meaning the shares offer better value, while a higher ratio can be interpreted as meaning the shares offer worse value.

The PEG ratio provides a broader view than just the P/E ratio, as it gives more insight into AMC Entertainment's future profitability. By accounting for growth, it could also help you if you're comparing the share prices of multiple high-growth companies.

AMC Entertainment's EBITDA

AMC Entertainment's EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation) is US$369 million (£0.0 million).

The EBITDA is a measure of a AMC Entertainment's overall financial performance and is widely used to measure stock profitability.

AMC Entertainment share price volatility

Over the last 12 months, AMC Entertainment's shares have ranged in value from as little as US$6.52 up to US$80.7352. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".

AMC.US volatility(beta: 2.11)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta measures a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NYSE average) beta is 1, while AMC Entertainment's is 2.106. This would suggest that AMC Entertainment's shares are significantly more volatile than the average for this exchange and represent a higher risk.
