AMC shares have been highly volatile over the past few days after the company found itself caught up in an unprecedented social media frenzy.

The commotion is largely down to small investors on Reddit forum WallStreetBets. Inspired forum members set on a mission to drive up the price of GameStop stock, which had been deliberately shorted by big-time investors.

The tactic saw huge success. GameStop (GME) stock climbed by more than 300%. Users quickly began to replicate the tactic elsewhere and AMC was drawn in, its price jumping to a close of $19.88 up from the previous day's close of just $5.

However, in a controversial move, several platforms halted or restricted trading across a number of stocks. They include GameStop (GME) and AMC. Unsurprisingly, this sent prices plummeting. AMC closed at $8.63.

How to buy shares in AMC Entertainment

  2. Open and fund your brokerage account. Complete an application with your personal and financial details, like your ID and tax file number. Fund your account with a bank transfer, credit card or debit card.

Shorting AMC Entertainment shares

There are currently 37.7 million AMC Entertainment shares held short by investors – that's known as AMC Entertainment's "short interest". This figure is 3.3% down from 39.0 million last month.

There are a few different ways that this level of interest in shorting AMC Entertainment shares can be evaluated.

AMC Entertainment's "short interest ratio" (SIR)

AMC Entertainment's "short interest ratio" (SIR) is the quantity of AMC Entertainment shares currently shorted divided by the average quantity of AMC Entertainment shares traded daily (recently around 164.0 million). AMC Entertainment's SIR currently stands at 0.23. In other words for every 100,000 AMC Entertainment shares traded daily on the market, roughly 230 shares are currently held short.

However AMC Entertainment's short interest can also be evaluated against the total number of AMC Entertainment shares, or, against the total number of tradable AMC Entertainment shares (the shares that aren't held by "insiders" or major long-term shareholders – also known as the "float"). In this case AMC Entertainment's short interest could be expressed as 0.11% of the outstanding shares (for every 100,000 AMC Entertainment shares in existence, roughly 110 shares are currently held short) or 0.157% of the tradable shares (for every 100,000 tradable AMC Entertainment shares, roughly 157 shares are currently held short).

Such a low SIR usually points to an optimistic outlook for the share price, with fewer people currently willing to bet against AMC Entertainment.

AMC Entertainment share price volatility

Over the last 12 months, AMC Entertainment's shares have ranged in value from as little as US$1.91 up to US$17.25. A popular way to gauge a stock's volatility is its "beta".

AMC.US volatility(beta: 1.45)Avg. volatility(beta: 1.00)LowHigh

Beta is a measure of a share's volatility in relation to the market. The market (NYSE average) beta is 1, while AMC Entertainment's is 1.4461.
