Liner lovers and bronzer buffs get ready. The Boxing Day sales are here.
Beauty queens, if the Boxing Day sales are not already your favourite time of year, it will be soon! This year the sale are expected to be even bigger now that NSW has lifted the legislation preventing most areas from trading on Boxing Day. What does this mean for you? Well apart from more places to shop, it means more sales, more competition and better discounts for you.
Why is Boxing Day such a massive shopping event? Well, since most retailers buy a whole load of extra stock for Christmas, there is usually heaps of stuff left over that they have to get rid of before the new year. This is why Boxing Day is the shopping day that beauty dreams are made of. Mascaras, eye creams, perfume, serums and more are all on sale.
To give you an idea of exactly how many great sales and discounts there are, Aussies spent over $2 billion on Boxing Day last year. For the Boxing Day sales period, which runs from 26 December to 15 January, everyone over the age of 14 spent $850 on average – an absolutely enormous figure given the median full-time weekly salary is roughly $883 after tax*.

Almost every major retailer had a Boxing Day deal last year. Savings varied greatly between different stores, with higher end retailers like David Jones and Saks Fifth Avenue offering smaller discounts on a selected range and more affordable stores like Priceline offering almost 50% discounts.
Here are just a few of the beauty retailers and their Boxing Day sale from last year.

- David Jones: Storewide Clearance
- Debenhams: Half price items
- Myer: Discounts across all departments

- Fresh Fragrances: Selected items on sale
Which stores will have a Boxing Day sale this year and what do we recommend?
This year is a very exciting year in beauty. At the tail end of last year, Sephora Pitt Street opened. This year we saw the open of the Sephora store at Macquarie Centre and the first Melbourne store. We also saw the launch of the online Sephora store.
So what does this mean for Boxing Day? Well for a while, Sephora direct competitors, Mecca Maxima were ruling the Australian beauty world and calling the shots. But now that Sephora is here with an Australia wide presence, things are changing. These two retailers are going to have to compete with each other for our business and we can expect to see prices drop as a result. Similarly, prices at the major department stores will also be lower given the increased market competition.
Here's a list of some of our favourite stores that we think will have a sale.
Why is it worth buying beauty products at the Boxing Day sale?
The real reason here is price. It is extremely unlikely you'll ever find better prices on the current ranges of beauty in stores.
Beauty and skincare products can be a little harsh on the wallet. Buying the right skin creams and the luxe foundations that you love is expensive, so why not stock up when they're cheaper? If you buy products at the sales that you would ultimately have to buy at some point, you'll end up saving yourself a wad of cash.
Also, loads of brand release a few limited edition products in the lead up to Christmas. So if you don't snap them up in the sales, you won't get another chance to try them.
The top beauty products this year and where to buy
The Base Skin Illuminator Matte Bronzer
If you use a bronzer to contour, then a cream product will looks more natural and wear better. You can really work it and blend it into the skin, plus it doesn't rub off like a powder would. You can also mix a tiny bit into to your normal foundation when you feel like having a little more colour in your face.

This is a duo product for lips and cheeks which means you're essentially getting two products for the price of one. Posie Tint is a stain, so unlike a tint or cream it stays on all day. A'Kin Rosehip Oil
Rosehip oil is one of the best products you can use on your skin. You can read more about that here. What to buy at the Boxing Day beauty sales
Here's a little beauty shopping list of essentials for skin health and cosmetic duo products. If you don't have one of all of these products you should consider investing.
Should you shop online or in store?
This is a personal choice really. Some time there are one off sales in store but most of the time in store sales are reflected online.
When you shop online you don't have to deal with crowds or packed carparks. You can also very easily compare products across stores. Products are also less likely to sell out online because the online store links back to a central warehouse, whereas a bricks and mortar store only has what's in the stock room on the premises.
If you prefer the experience of visiting a store and physically browsing through products then maybe in store shopping is for you. If you know what you want and you want to compare prices across multiple store quickly and easily, then online shopping is definitely for you.
When will we know what's on sale?
Unfortunately, we probably won't know exactly what is on sale until Boxing Day. Many retailers keep their sale announcements very secret to build hype and anticipation. However, there are a few sales already active like the Surfstitch Boxing Day sale which includes Ella Bache and the StrawberryNET sale offering up to 85% off. Keep checking this page for updates. We'll keep this page up to date with active sales - they'll appear at the bottom of the page in a feed.
If you want to know as soon as a sale is announced, you can sign up to our deals email. We'll let you know what's on sale and when.
