Has Boony's record been broken? Is sculling 52 beers on a long-haul flight more impressive than downing a bottle of cognac in 15 minutes?

A Chinese tourist has made headlines worldwide after sculling a bottle of cognac she wasn't allowed to take through airport security in Beijing. Unfortunately, the result of necking 700mls of Rémy Martin XO Excellence was that she became so drunk she couldn't board her flight anyway.

On hearing this story, we were immediately reminded of Australian cricket legend David Boone, who reportedly drank 52 cans of VB on a flight from Sydney to London. In alcoholic terms, which is worse?

Rémy Martin XO Excellence is 40% alcohol by volume. In a 700ml bottle, that amounts to 280mls of alcohol.

Victoria Bitter is 4.9% alcohol by volume. In a 375ml can, that gives 18.4mls of alcohol. Across 52 of them, that's a whopping 955.5mls of alcohol. The total amount of alcohol Boony consumed was 3.4 times greater.

However, that was consumed over a flight which typically takes around 22 hours, including stopovers. Assuming 20 hours of in-the-air drinking, that averages out at one beer every 23 minutes.

After 16 VBs, Boony would have absorbed the same amount of alcohol as in the bottle of cognac, but it would have him taken 6 hours and 9 minutes to do so. That would have given his body time to process some of the earlier alcohol. Our Chinese tourist did not have that advantage.

So we're calling this one a tie: Boony consumed more alcohol, but the unfortunate tourist consumed it much faster. Remember: drinking to the point of insensibility is a really, really bad idea.
