Here's exactly why Biossance's 100% squalene oil is the new hero product everyone is talking about.
Why we love this product
You'd be forgiven for not knowing about Biossance. The all-natural clean beauty brand has only recently launched into the Australian market at Sephora.
The quick verdict
Why is it good? It's a clean and sustainably-produced oil that nourishes skin deeply.
How much is it? $50
Where to buy it? Sephora
But the Biossance journey actually began in 2003. The brand's labs created a plant-derived cure for malaria which allowed for more accessibility - thanks to the effort, 120 million royalty-free treatments have been distributed. This unique work inspired the team to look deeper into plant-based alternatives and use the same biotechnology in different ways. Thus Biossance skincare was born.
Biossance is all about clean beauty. It's devoid of harmful ingredients and is totally fragrance free. But clean beauty is more than just a list of ingredients. Biossance is also sustainability produced from renewable sources with vegan formulation. Clean and eco-friendly in every sense.
If you're anything like me, clean beauty products are something I'm cautious of. I love the idea of sustainable, earth-friendly products but I also need them to work. I'm not shelling out my hard-earned cash on a serum that fails to do anything. But Biossance is a brand that very quickly erodes any of those concerns. A brand passionate about efficacy, all the products are clinically tested - so the results are proven.

And now onto the brand's signature product, its 100% plant-based squalene oil. Squalene is a compound that occurs naturally in our skin. It's a type of lipid, the fats and oils that keep your skin nourished and protected. As we get older, our skin starts producing less squalene which leads to exposure, damage, dryness and ultimately ageing.
Biossance's 100% squalene oil is just that - 100% squalene. Squalene in skincare is something that is often taken from animal sources, but this Biossance has derived all of its squalene from plants, specifically sugarcane. Biossance calls its squalene oil "nature's best moisturiser" and in my opinion, they're not far off.
It's a thinner oil, not particularly viscous. But it a rich, very oily kind of oil And a little goes a long way. It takes time to rub in but as it works its way into your skin, you can see an instant difference. Dry, scaly legs are instantly renewed. Flat, lifeless skin is plumped. And hay-like hair is softened. Yes, you can use this product in your hair too. And its a moisturising effects lasts. After my first use, my skin - particularly on my legs - stayed plump and nourished for two days before I needed to reapply.
Some other major pluses are that this is an all-purpose product. If you're someone that's sick of having different products for everything, you'll love this. This one oil is designed to be used on your body, on your face and in your hair. And it comes in a handy pump bottle which I personally think it much more convenient than the dropper system most oils come with.
Of course, it's wonderful to know that I'm using a high-quality skincare product that is clean and sustainable. Biossance is a brand that is not forcing consumers to choose between ethics and efficacy. I love know that my skincare is made from renewable sources, that it's free from anything harmful and that it still makes my skin plump and baby soft.
Affordability
A bottle of this stuff rings in at $50 and I think it's a fair price. Although it can be used as a body and hair product, it is in essence a face serum and is priced as one. $50 is reasonable for what it does.
