When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

Discover the best time to visit this Southeast Asian nation for good, dry weather and less crowds.

We sussed out the best months to visit Vietnam when the weather is bang-on to enjoy all that the country has to offer.

When is the best time to visit Vietnam?

March and April are two of Vietnam’s driest months, both in terms of rainfall and humidity. In the north, around Hanoi, it is winter so you can expect cool temperatures. In central and south Vietnam, from Hoi An to Ho Chi Minh City, it’s the dry season, so you can expect a hot and dry climate without that sticky humidity.

As March and April are outside of the school holiday period (Christmas) and the crowds will have thinned out by now, too.

Cheapest time to fly to Vietnam

Overview

The weather in Vietnam can vary greatly depending on where you’re planning to visit. The north experiences a distinct summer and winter while central and south Vietnam experiences wet and dry seasons. Ideally, you’ll want to search for months with the least amount of rainfall and low humidity.

Vietnam is a popular destination for summer holiday makers, so avoid the school holiday periods, particularly in January and July to August if you want to see it without the crowds.

Best time to visit Vietnam, weather wise: March and April have the best weather overall.

Best time to visit Vietnam for...

  • City exploring and temple hopping: Long days spent walking require cool temperatures so aim for January to March if you’re visiting north Vietnam or December if you’re visiting the south.
  • Sunbathing and watersports: Vietnam is blessed with a long coastline of beaches. The best time to visit is between April and July when the weather is warm but it’s not monsoon season.
  • Trekking Sapa: The best time to trek Vietnam’s iconic rice fields is from March to May or September to November as they offer sunny days and cool nights with minimal rainfall.
  • Cruising Halong Bay: Peak season in Halong Bay is December to January. To avoid the worst of the crowds, visit two months before or after these months as the weather is still optimally cool and dry.
