Best time to visit New Caledonia
September to November.
You could never accuse New Caledonia of being cold, but the region’s winter months technically run from May to September. At this time of year, especially in August, it’s possible to experience temperatures of as little as 17°C – not ideal for sunbathing but fine for hiking and exploring.
Rainfall also tends to be low in September and October, and often November too, because the rainy season takes place from the end of November to April.
Unfortunately, the best time to visit weather-wise coincides with peak tourist season. You’ll have to share this piece of paradise with more people if you visit at this time of year. But you won’t exactly experience rush hour conditions anywhere on the islands.
New Caledonia’s summer runs from late November to April. At this time of year temperatures spike up to the mid 30s. These months are also classed as the region’s rainy season. Occasionally, the islands can be hit by cyclones. This is most likely to happen between February and April.
Winter runs from May to the start of September. But winter is a bit of an overstatement as far as New Caledonia is concerned. Daytime temperatures tend to hang around 20°C at this time of year, although the mercury can drop to 14°C on occasion. Plus, temperatures in the inner island can drop to zero at night – so hikers should take layers on their adventures.

- Beaches. The average monthly temperature in New Caledonia is 24°C in the shade, so trips to the beach are possible almost all year round. If you’re a true sun worshipper, the best time to visit is between September and November when temperatures are warm and rainfall is low. And it’s best to avoid the height of the rainy season – around February – as beach umbrellas are made to shelter you from the sun not storms. For snorkelling, visibility is best between April and November.
- Cruises. School holidays in Australia push the cost of cruising up a little in December and January, but not to unreasonable degrees. The difference between the price of a cruise in peak season compared to off peak can be as little as $50. If you’re not tied to school terms, try booking a little earlier – between September and November and you’ll still get to experience the warm and dry weather conditions.
