Every season has so much to offer that it can be tough to choose the best time to visit the Hunter Valley.

To help you out, we've simplified your choices by what activities you can do per season and the cost of travelling during different months.


Best time to visit the Hunter Valley

Autumn (March to May) is the best season to visit the Hunter Valley as the temperatures are pleasant with minimal rain. During these months, the landscape gets painted with hues of orange, yellow, green and brown, making it a photographer's delight. Autumn is one of the Hunter Valley's peak seasons though, so prices may be high and crowds many.

Another peak season is summer. This is popular for weddings, families and those hoping to catch the vibrant atmosphere of harvest season. However, it does come with intermittant thundestorms which may rain on your parade.

For the cheapest flights and accommodation, visit in June, July, September and October, excluding the school holidays. These months still have plenty to offer but tend to be on the cold side which keeps visitors away.

Overview

The Hunter Valley enjoys a moderate climate with four seasons.

In summer, the temperature rises to a maximum of around 30℃ while it can dip to 5℃ in winter. December to February attracts the largest number of visitors due to long summer vacations and crop harvests. However, these months are also the hottest and wettest time of the year.

Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) seasons see pleasant weather and fewer people.

Winter has clear skies but can also be foggy and misty.

  • A honeymoon or anniversary: Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are the best seasons for couples to visit the Hunter Valley. Both season have a relatively quiet atmosphere and pleasant weather.
  • Wine tour/tasting: Summer (December to February) is harvest time for vineyards in the Hunter Valley. This makes it the perfect season to go on wine tours and tastings.
  • Hot-air balloon and scenic flights: Spring (September to November) is the see the Hunter Valley from above as the pastures come to life and the wildflowers bloom.
  • Hiking in the Barrington Tops National Park: Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) offer pleasant temperatures and minimal rainfall.
