When is the best time to go to Greece?

If you’ve been dreaming of gyros under the Acropolis and sunsets off the coast of Oia then this is when to book your trip to make that dream come true.

Greece offers holidaymakers everything from romantic walks on pristine beaches to exciting adventures through crumbling ruins. Whatever your agenda, we’ve considered the weather, peak periods and pricing to uncover the best time to visit Greece.

The best time to go to Greece

March to June and September to October.

Why?

Summer break is undoubtedly Greece’s most popular season, especially if you’re planning to island hop. For a trip without the crowds but with similar weather, try travelling during the shoulder months of March to June and September to October.

Overview

Greece experiences four seasons. Its summers are hot and dry with maximum temperatures of 29℃. The hottest month is August, which is also one of the most popular months for tourists.

Greek winters drop to around 10℃ and aren’t ideal for island-hopping. This is the off-peak season when most resorts are closed for maintenance.

The Greek Islands’ peak season is from April to the end of October. This is when the resorts thrive and the ferries between islands operate more frequently.

Greece is a popular holiday destination for travellers worldwide. For a crowd-free holiday at a bargain price, travel outside of the Northern Hemisphere’s summer holiday break (June to August).

Weather and prices

The best time to go to Greece, weatherwise: April to October is the peak season for the Greek Islands. These months offer sunny days and warm weather for beachgoers. As winters are mild, November to March is the ideal period for holidaymakers wishing to sightsee and visit the mainland.

The cheapest time to go to Greece: When travelling to the Greek Islands, search for deals in April and October as the thinning crowds mean resorts may drop their prices to keep business going. These are also good months to travel inland as temperatures in popular cities such as Athens can be scorching in the heart of summer.

The best time to visit Greece for…

  • The beaches: April to October is the ideal time for the Greek Islands, as the weather is perfect for the beach.
  • Sailing: Island hopping across the Aegean Sea is best done during the in-season from mid-April to mid-October. This is also when most sailing tours of the Greek Islands are available.
  • Sightseeing: Sightseeing it good all year round, however, it’s best to travel outside of July and August to avoid unpleasantly hot days.
