Best time to cruise to New Caledonia

September to mid-November

Why?

During September, October and the first half of November, temperatures are warm, humidity is not as high and rainfall is low, making ideal weather conditions for a cruise. Crowds are also smaller at this time of year, so you don’t have to rush for tickets or pay higher prices.

The area receives high rainfall accompanied by occasional cyclones from December to March.

Overview

New Caledonia enjoys an oceanic semi-tropical climate with two main seasons: summer from November to April, and winter from May to September. During the warm season, average temperatures are around 25°C to 27°C with heavy rains and risks of tropical cyclones. Summers are wet and humid while the winters are dry.

During winter temperatures average between 20°C to 23°C and rainfall is low.

December and January are peak travel months due to school holidays.

Weather and prices

Best time to cruise to New Caledonia, weather-wise: The weather from September to mid-November is dry and temperatures are warm, so it’s the ideal time to enjoy a cruise.

Cheapest time to cruise to New Caledonia: February to July are the cheapest months due to fewer crowds and the beginning of this period being the end of cyclone season. If you do bag a bargain during the stormy season, make sure you do have cruise travel insurance to cover your holiday if you are affected by bad weather and end up missing a port or having your cruise delayed.

Best time to cruise to New Caledonia and visit:

  • Noumea: From June to November the climate is pleasant and perfect for exploring the urban attractions and bays of Noumea.
  • Ile de Pines/Isle of Pines: Isle of Pines has a pleasant climate throughout the year. Don’t forget to check for low and high tides on the day of your visit as the snorkelling areas are tidal estuaries and the swimmable area becomes much smaller.
  • Lifou: Although Lifou is an excellent beach destination year round, avoid the busy times of December and January if you want a calm holiday. To spot humpback whales and be a part of a wedding, plan your visit between July and September.
