Best tacos in Sydney 2019

Here’s where to find the best tacos in Sydney. You’re welcome.

Who doesn’t love tacos? They’re juicy, delicious and you don’t even need a plate. Best consumed with lashings of tequila and a lax attitude to table manners.

The Norfolk, Surry Hills The Norfolk, Surry Hills1 The Norfolk, Surry Hills2

The Norfolk, Surry Hills

These guys know good tacos. Their soft shell variety comes in fish, pork, chicken, beef and veg and on Tuesdays you can pick them up for $3. But that’s not the most exciting part. The most exciting part is they take the role of mad scientist in the field of tacos, by coming up with creations such as the DEEP FRIED BANANA TACO WITH PEANUT BUTTER ICE CREAM, ICE MAGIC, CARAMEL SAUCE, CRUSHED PEANUTS & 100s and 1000s (left image). Yes, it is really happening. There is a god.

Get amongst it.

SoCal, Neutral Bay

SoCal, Neutral Bay

This little ode to Southern Californian hospitality and beach charm serves up fresh and spicy food with a heavy Mexican influence. The tacos are definitely one of the menu standouts; the three types (baja fish, steak with shaved fennel and pork al Pastor) come in servings of four, so turn up with either an empty stomach or a friend to share them with. Our advice? Rock up early to secure a spot on the deck and wash it down with one of many tequila-based cocktails. Watch out: things could get messy.

  • Address: 1 Young St, Neutral Bay
  • Opening times: Monday to Tuesday, 4pm - midnight, Wednesday to Thursday, noon - 1am, Friday & Saturday midnight - 2am, Sunday noon - midnight

El Loco, Surry Hills

El Loco, Surry Hills

They say these tacos will “send you completely loco”, but the only way to test that theory is to try them out. You poor thing. You’ll just have to work your way through the five tacos on offer to properly find out. They’re a little more gourmet than your usual fare; our pick is the spit roasted pork with pineapple salsa, but the chilli marinated tofu is also intriguing. Best consumed with lashings of tequila, of course.

BONUS: Keep an eye out for their monthly taco challenges. Victory (and your name on the wall) could be yours!

  • Address: 64 Foveaux St, Surry Hills
  • Opening times: Monday to Thursday, noon - late, Friday & Saturday noon - 3am, Sunday noon - 10pm/li>
  • Facebook: El Loco
  • Gluten-free option? Yes (substitute the tortilla for lettuce)
Cranky Fins, Palm Beach

Cranky Fins, Palm Beach

It’s time to take a road trip to Palm Beach, because a) it’s Palm Beach and b) Cranky Fins has Taco Wednesdays, where you can gorge on $5 tacos and $10 margaritas ALL DAY. This is the sort of place where surfboards are decorational and the decor is brighter than the cocktails, so it’s ideal for whiling away a few hours. It’s also the perfect escape from the city… even if it’s still in Sydney.

  • Address: 1 Beach Rd, Palm Beach
  • Opening times: Wednesday - Sunday midday-10.30pm
  • Facebook: Cranky Fins
  • Gluten-free option? Yes, on a lettuce leaf
El Topo Mexican, Bondi Junction

El Topo Mexican, Bondi Junction

In a place where Dios de les Muertos skeletons are painted on brightly coloured walls and a back bar heavy in tequila awaits you, you’d expect them to know a thing or two about tacos. They do not disappoint. For something a little bit different, try the soft shell crab, mulato mayo, jalapeno & cactus salsa taco, but stay tuned - they’re extending their taco menu in the very near future. Napkins at the ready, people.

  • Address: Level 4 of The Eastern, 500 Oxford St
  • Opening Times: Monday (6pm - 10pm), Tuesday to Sunday (noon - 3pm & 6pm - 10pm)
  • Facebook: El Topo Mexican
  • Gluten-free option?
Barrio Chino, Potts Point Barrio Chino, Potts Point1 Barrio Chino, Potts Point2

Barrio Chino, Potts Point

Barrio Chino gets immediate brownie points (taco points?) for having more options than anyone else on this list, including the intriguing “taco of the day”. Soft shell crab, baja fish, lamb shoulder, carne arrachera… the list goes on. They’ve got that whole rustic vibe thing going on (and a 3am license come Fridays and Saturdays) so this is the place to head for a late dinner that turns into tequila shots. Oops.

  • Address: 28-30 Bayswater Rd, Potts Point
  • Opening times: Tuesday to Wednesday 5pm - midnight, Thursday 5pm-midnight, Friday & Saturday, 5pm - 3am, Sunday 5pm - midnight
  • Facebook: Barrio Chino
  • Gluten-free option? Yes
Flying Fajita Sisters, Glebe Flying Fajita Sisters, Glebe1 Flying Fajita Sisters, Glebe2

Flying Fajita Sisters, Glebe

First of all, they have the best name on this list - hands down. Their tacos make up just a small portion of the menu, but they’re worth noticing. As well as the usual pork and chicken varieties, they also have a grilled snapper and a Mexican corn truffle on offer. The tacos come served in pairs, so our advice is to head down with a friend and do a taco swap for maximum tasting.

  • Address: 65 Glebe Point road, Glebe
  • Opening times: Daily 6pm - 9.30pm
  • Facebook: Flying Fajita Sisters
  • Gluten-free option? Yes
Cantina Movil Mexican Street Food, All over Sydney

Cantina Movil Mexican Street Food, All over Sydney

The food-truck-formerly-known-as-Cantina-Mobil drives all over Sydney, spreading the taco love far and wide. Choose your style (taco in this case) and your filling (chipotle beef, chilorio pork, achiote chicken, or pinto beans) and you’re good to go. If mobile food that COULD POSSIBLY BE ON YOUR DOORSTEP (keep an eye on Facebook for where and when) isn’t enough for you, then the vibrant orange truck with the adorable sign above it should do the trick. Even food trucks have specials; on Tuesdays, tacos are just $3.

Chica Bonita, Manly Chica Bonita, Manly1 Chica Bonita, Manly2

Chica Bonita, Manly

Welcome to Manly’s little slice of Mexico, where bright colours reign supreme and your taco is served with a little attitude (‘Tacos Yo!’). There’s no need to plan your visit to get the best deal as tacos are $5 any day of the week. Want to amp it up a bit? Take advantage of their $10 beer and tequila shot, which is so self-explanatory that if you need help, you probably shouldn’t be drinking it.

  • Address: 7 The Corso, Manly
  • Opening Times: Tuesday to Sunday, 11.30am - 3pm, 6pm - 11pm
  • Facebook: Chica Bonita Manly
  • Gluten-free option? Yes
Beach Burrito Company, Bondi Beach

Beach Burrito Company, Bondi Beach

From humble beginnings in Bondi, these guys have spread their love of the taco (and skateboarders and skulls) to Brisbane, Canberra and Jindabyne, as well as a few more Sydney locations. They’ve developed a bit of a cult following, so they must be doing something right. These guys have both options in the soft shell vs crispy shell debate - ¿Porqué no los dos? - so give them each a whirl on Taco Tuesdays.

  • Address: 252 Campbelle Parade, Bondi (and other locations around Sydney)
  • Opening Times: Daily, 11.30am - 10pm
  • Facebook: Beach Burrito Company
  • Gluten-free option? Yes
