2013 was a musical year of soaring highs and abysmal lows. Here are our picks for the best tunes of the year.
2013 gave us a range of aural experiences. We had former Disney stars inspiring young girls to twerk, pop queens shock the world with surprise albums and a young New Zealander take the music world by storm. To farewell the past year and its musical stylings, we've compiled the ultimate list of the best songs of 2013 for your judging pleasure. This list is complete with songs that shocked us, songs that we played on repeat and songs that changed the music world forever. Enjoy.
|Lorde- Royals||Nobody saw this song coming and if you say you did, you'd be lying. The world was completely surprised that this then-16 year old girl from New Zealand could come out with such a fresh sound. This song has taken the top spot because of the girl who created it. She walked into the music world with guns blazing and refused to accept it the way it is.|
|Avicii- Wake Me Up||Avicii certainly isn't one to play by music's rules, but when he came out with this country-electrofusion the world was still surprised. The song featured Aloe Blacc from 'I Need a Dollar' fame and was described as a "fun experiment" by the Swedish DJ and producer. The success of the song may have inspired Avicii to continue with this new fusion of styles, with his latest release featuring Country-style vocals and electronic backing.|
|Arcade Fire- Reflektor||Arcade Fire has long been a music-heavyweight and although not all the songs from their new Album made it into the charts, this song reminded us why we love them. The track features both French and English vocals which gives it a beautiful feeling. The song is a testament to their classic musical style and one to remember from 2013.|
|Robin Thicke featuring T.I. and Pharrell- Blurred Lines||With 237 million views on Youtube (and that's the clean version) this song completely took over 2013 for a few months. The song and music video was released in March and quickly gained international attention and topped the charts in multiple countries, notably topping the Billboard charts in the US for twelve consecutive weeks. The song was intended to be controversial and of course it was, with the explicit video featuring three topless models.|
|Chvrches- Recover||Recover was the second single from Glasgow band Chvrches (pronounced Churches), the amazing vocals and synth pop style of the song, which has been described by record label Neon Gold as "a Godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy", has stuck in the hearts of listeners. This song cemented this up-and-coming pop group in the music scene.|
|Disclosure featuring Alunageorge- White Noise||If you were out clubbing in early 2013, then chances are you heard this song played. Repeatedly. This song was extremely popular and featured fresh, clean vocals and a quick accompanying beat that saw it stay in the charts until later in the year.|
|Arctic Monkeys- Do I wanna Know?||If you've heard this song, then you will be saying yes, yes Arctic Monkeys- I do wanna know. From the first deep guitar chords you know this song is going to be something special. The vocals seem to echo the style from the 2012 song "R U Mine?" and is a very hard-edged yet fine tuned sound. The tempo in the song keeps it in check and positions it as a Rock classic.|
|Beyonce- XO||Beyonce only just scraped in to our top ten best songs of 2013, not because she isn't amazing, but because no-one knew she had an album coming out. She completely surprised the world with a new album that was available exclusively on iTunes. The internet's reaction made news around the world and the visual album gave fans a range of of songs to love before the year was out. XO is one of the early favourites from the album, but really any of the songs are more than adequate.|
|Drake featuring Majid Jordan- Hold On, We're Going Home||The second single off the third Studio album from the Canadian recording artist, the song was a breath of fresh air for many fans. The song was released with a short film/music video that helped bolster the tune's popularity, but the song as itself is still impressive. The song has a timeless quality that has seen it safely into our top ten.|
|Daft Punk Featuring Pharrell Williams- Get Lucky||Although not a reflection of how good this song is, it was played on repeat by millions of radio stations in Australia and overseas. Daft Punk has made some seriously amazing songs in the past and this one is no different. It's a true reflection of the talent of the collaborating artists and because it has stuck in our heads for so long throughout the year we have awarded it tenth in our best songs of 2013.|
