The Samsung Galaxy S22 and its cousins the S22 Plus and S22 Ultra are available for pre-order, ahead of going on sale on 4 March. Most of us have first-hand knowledge that it's best to get a case on your phone as soon as possible.

With that in mind, here's Finder's rundown on the best cases of every style and price bracket, ahead of the S22's launch. For this case we've focussed on the standard S22, but these cases are available for all models.

Spigen Tough Armour Case

Best Galaxy S22 case overall

Spigen Tough Armour Case

Not yet rated

Pros

  • Great protection
  • Slim, sleek design

Cons

  • Colours lacking in variety
  • Somewhat minimal screen protection

What really sets the Spigen Tough Armour case apart is an incredible level of protection without the bulk. Military-grade certified drop protection and Air Cushion technology mean you can sleep easy knowing your phone is extremely-well protected. Raised edges around the camera provide extra protection for one of the S22's best assets.

Though the case itself is a little lacking in screen protection, it is compatible with Spigen's wide array of screen protectors. At present, you can only get this case in 2, pretty similar colours, Black and Gunmetal. It is also compatible with the wireless charging functionality of the S22. Overall, at just $34.99 (plus $4 shipping), this is incredible value, and our pick for the best overall case.

TR4U Crystal Clear Case

Best cheap Galaxy S22 case

TR4U Crystal Clear Case

Not yet rated

Pros

  • Good value
  • Impact-, scratch- and tear-resistant

Cons

  • Basic transparent look not for everyone
  • Not as protective as other cases

The Galaxy S22 is a costly phone, but rest assured, you can secure its protection for a low cost thanks to TR4U. For just $14.99, you can enjoy 1.5mm camera-protecting bezels and 1.2mm screen-protecting bezels. Its thin back ensures the phone is still a joy to operate, and supports wireless charging.

The case is made from a fusion of soft thermo polyurethane and hard plastic. This case will protect well against scratches and scuffs, but at this price point, solid protection from big drops can't be assured. But if you want to save some money and enjoy a transparent look, this is the case for you.

TORRO Genuine Leather Case

Best Galaxy S22 leather case

TORRO Genuine Leather Case

Not yet rated

Pros

  • Quality, genuine leather
  • Great wallet features

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Colours lacking in variety

Genuine leather is a great choice for a truly premium phone case. TORRO has provided just that, with quality leather and plenty of other features. An integrated stand function allows for horizontal screen viewing, and despite the layers of quality design, it even allows for QI wireless charging.

Though the lack of a choice of colours may be disappointing (you can pay $7 extra on Amazon for a dark brown version), TORRO's visual design is striking and beautiful as it is. It has a durable TPU frame, and has wallet functionality, with 3 credit card slots and a note compartment. All in all, there isn't much not to love about this Galaxy S22 case.

Yidai-Silu Leather Wallet Case

Best Galaxy S22 wallet/flip case

Yidai-Silu Leather Wallet Case
Image: Supplied/Finder

Not yet rated

Pros

  • Premium real-leather construction
  • Great wallet features

Cons

  • Protection could be better
  • Wrist-strap can get in the way

If you want to save pocket space with a phone case that doubles as a wallet, Yidai-Silu has provided just that, and much more to boot. Beautifully crafted with genuine leather, and with excellent wallet functionality featuring 3 card slots, and inner pockets for cash and other items. It also has a magnetic clasp and a wrist-strap, which is thankfully removable, as some customers have complained it can get in the way.

At $48.99, it isn't cheap, but neither is the Galaxy S22 case market in general. Though the Yidai-Silu does contain TPU, it should be noted that these cases aren't necessarily the best option for heavy-duty protection. So if you have a slew of cracked phones in your drawer, you may want to look elsewhere.

SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle Pro Series (Samsung S22)

Best protective Galaxy S22 case

SUPCASE Unicorn Beetle Pro Series (Samsung S22)
Image: Supplied/Finder

Not yet rated

Pros

  • Excellent levels of protection
  • Great value

Cons

  • No built-in screen protector
  • Bulky design

Don't be fooled by the price tag. This is a premium product, on which the small price is just a bonus. Multi-layered TPU and polycarbonate materials will give you all the protection you could ask for. Enjoy a built-in kickstand and well-designed cutouts allowing easy access to all buttons and ports.

One controversial change made by SUPCASE with this series is the lack of a screen protector. Some customers prefer this, as SUPCASE has faced criticism that screen protectors made the phone's touchscreen difficult to operate. But if a screen protector is a deal-breaker for you, you'll have to look elsewhere.

Spigen Liquid Crystal Case

Best transparent Galaxy S22 case

Spigen Liquid Crystal Case

Not yet rated

Pros

  • Smart design prevents watermarks
  • Raised edges guarantee protection

Cons

  • Lacking some bells and whistles
  • $4 shipping

Transparent cases are a popular way to show off the design and status of our gadgets, while still ensuring some protection. Spigen is once again our go-to brand for this, with beautiful, high-quality clear design, and raised edges to keep your precious screen and camera in tip-top shape. Also of note is a smart design to prevent watermarks.

The $4 shipping on Spigen products from Amazon doesn't hurt too bad when it comes to more expensive cases, but for a $19.99 case, paying 20% of that on shipping might be a little painful. You should also be advised that some fan-favourite features such as lanyard holes are not present on this product.

How to choose a phone cases

Picture not described

The primary purpose of a phone case is to protect your phone against drops and bumps. In addition, they can add a stylish flourish to your phone and sometimes provide extra benefits such as belt clips, inbuilt stands and pockets for your licence and credit card.

Here are a few things that you need to consider.

Compatibility

The most crucial thing you need to check is whether the case you're considering is actually compatible with the smartphone model you own. Read the fine print closely to check which models the accessory is designed for, and if you're unsure what model of phone you have, check the original packaging or instruction manual.

Third party or OEM?

Many phone manufacturers design and sell cases as an optional accessory. For example, you can purchase a range of Galaxy phone cases from Samsung's official website. This is known as original equipment manufacturing (OEM).

OEM cases are guaranteed to work optimally with your phone as they were designed by the same manufacturer itself. However, they also tend to be more expensive and there are limited options available.

Buying phone cases from third-party manufacturers opens up a much wider range of options, many with more affordable price tags. Just be mindful that quality control is a lot more varied in this space, particularly when it comes to "no name" brands.

Some third-party brands have an official partnership with the phone manufacturer. This means the two companies worked closely together to ensure the case works as advertised. Think of it as a seal of approval from the phone manufacturer.

Price

The amount you pay for a phone case is entirely dependent on the features you need. No name silicone cases typically start at around $5, while high-quality leather options can sell for several hundred dollars.

As with any product, you generally get what you pay for when it comes to phone cases. However, an expensive option isn't necessarily a better choice than a cheaper alternative. Customer reviews - and the guide above - can help you to find a quality case even if you are shopping on a budget.

Case types

Phone cases are made from a wide variety of different materials including plastic, silicone and leather (both faux and genuine.) Some "ruggedised" cases combine a hard outer material with a softer inner layer for extra protection. There are also different types to choose from, including wallet cases, shell cases and flip cases.

Skin and shell cases: Slimline skin cases allow you to maintain the stylish look of your phone while offering an extra layer of protection, but they're not known for heavy-duty protection. Rigid shell cases are also available, and some include bumpers for added impact protection.

Flip cases: These cases provide open protection for your phone's screen and can be flipped open when you need to use your device. Many also double as a stand if you want to watch videos on your device.
Phone wallet cases. As the name suggests, these cases are a lot like a wallet for your phone. They often also include storage slots for your cash, cards and driver's licence.

Heavy-duty cases: Also known as rugged and tough cases, these accessories are designed to protect your phone against heavy falls and punishing treatment. Great for tradies and farmers, they can absorb impacts and reduce the risk of you damaging your device, but they also tend to be bulky and heavy.
