What are the benefits of drinking nut milk or plant-based milk?

Nut milks and plant-based milks are a dairy-free alternative to cow milk and are suitable vegans and vegetarians as well.

Some nut milks and plant-based milks, such as almond milk, are versatile. You can use them in just about anything – from making your morning smoothie to baking your favourite dessert.

Nut and plant-based milks often contain added vitamins and are naturall low in cholesterol. Make sure to check the label of any plant-based milk you're buying for more specific nutrient information.

What to look for when choosing a nut milk or plant-based milk

Here are a few factors to consider when comparing nut milks and plant-based milks:

  • Think about where you’re going to use the milk. For cereals, many people like almond milk is ideal because it has a light consistency and a nutty flavour. For coffee, lots of people use soy milk because it's rich and creamy and can foam up like dairy milk.
  • When choosing a plant-based milk or nut milk, consider the taste. Coconut and soy milk are often sweet and creamy while almond milk, hemp milk and hazelnut milk have nuttier flavours.
  • Read the nutrition information of the milk to know what you're getting. Some nut and plant-based milks contain protein, vitamin D, calcium and iron. Many dairy-free milk options have added sweeteners and flavourings like vanilla or chocolate.
