Apple iPhone 12 Pro Silicone Case

Best iPhone 12 Pro case for most people

Apple iPhone 12 Pro Silicone Case
Image: Supplied/Finder

Pros

  • Soft-touch silicone makes for a comfortable feel
  • MagSafe and Qi wireless charging compatible

Cons

  • Pricey for a relatively basic case
  • Not super protective

Why we chose it

Apple's attention to detail is second to none. Given that, it makes perfect sense that its Silicone Case for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is the best pick for people wanting to cushion their brand new toy.

Made from smooth silicone, the case sports a soft-touch finish that makes it comfortable to hold throughout hours of scrolling through Instagram, replying to emails or anything in between. The case's interior contains a plush microfibre lining to protect your brand-spanking-new phone from any unsightly marks.

It's not packed with all the bells and whistles you might expect from a $79 case, but it's among the first on the market to support the company's reimagined MagSafe technology. While some may remember the technology from last decade's MacBooks, it takes on a much different form here. New MagSafe accommodates adding extra accessories to your phone (such as a wallet attachment) or fast wireless charging, so you'll be able to chuck your iPhone 12 Pro on the charger just as quickly with this case on as you could if you went bare.

The case snugly wraps around the iPhone 12 Pro, staying firmly in place and aligning with the help of those built-in magnets. It's not a bulky case, allowing your phone to keep a low profile in your hand, pocket or bag. Standard Qi wireless charging still works with the case attached, so even if you're not using the fancy new $65 MagSafe wireless charger, you won't need to take this case off.

The Apple Silicone Case is revered by customers, receiving an impressively high 4.6 out of 5 rating from more than 6,000 global reviews on Amazon. Buyers were elated with the case's soft feel, tiny profile and impressive drop protection. The largest gripe people had was with the price, which is rather steep when you've just dropped more than $1,600 on the iPhone itself. Some noted that the inclusion of MagSafe wasn't such a stellar selling point, since accessory compatibility is still super limited.

JETech iPhone 12 Pro Case

Best cheap iPhone 12 Pro case

JETech iPhone 12 Pro Case
Image: Supplied/Finder

Pros

  • Super cheap
  • Wraps tightly around the iPhone 12 Pro

Cons

  • Clear material might yellow quickly
  • Thinner design leaves the camera exposed

Why we chose it

With an unapologetically basic design and non-existent feature set, JETech's clear case for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is a budget-friendly option with just one purpose: protect your new device. The $8.99 case is the best pick if you're looking to save a pretty penny after investing big on a new iPhone.

The JETech Case for iPhone 12 and 12 Pro isn't eye-catching, but it's not supposed to be. The bargain-basement sub-$10 price tag gets you a run-of-the-mill clear TPU case with no MagSafe, no enhanced protection and no soft texture. No matter how you look at it, this is a simple no-frills case, but it does its job. The iPhone 12 Pro snugly fits into the case's rigid body, and thick bumpers protect it from side drops.

JETech's case does have some glaring shortcomings. The fancy new three-camera array on the back of the iPhone 12 Pro is barely protected, with the cover only slightly protruding to shield the lenses from drops. Clear cases are also a challenge to maintain, with marks and dust clearly showing whenever they're stuck in the case. Clear cases also tend to yellow over time.

The case is thin enough to support Qi wireless charging, so you won't need to remove the case every time you plonk your iPhone on a charging pad. While you probably didn't expect it given the price, there's no MagSafe compatibility, so you won't be able to whack that leather wallet accessory onto this case.

Its basic design didn't phase customers, with the case boasting a 4.7 out of 5 rating from 3,700 reviews on Amazon. Buyers were happy with the case's fit and solid build. However, it lost points among purchasers for its lack of camera protection. Some customers also noted that the case could quickly turn yellow, although others said it took a while for that to happen.

OtterBox Defender Series iPhone 12 Pro

Best protective iPhone 12 Pro case

OtterBox Defender Series iPhone 12 Pro
Image: Supplied/Finder

Pros

  • Cover helps keep dust from clogging up ports
  • Grippy side texture helps to prevent drops

Cons

  • Much bulkier and heavier than most cases
  • Not the prettiest case on the market

Why we chose it

OtterBox built itself on its prowess for creating ultra-durable and protective cases to shield pricey and shatter-prone phones and has continued to make next-generation products to save people the pain of forking out hundreds of dollars for repairs. Its Defender Series for the iPhone 12 Pro is by no means the world's most slim or elegant case, but it will absolutely protect your phone. And that's what makes it the best protective iPhone 12 Pro case money can buy.

The Defender Series was made from the ground up for protection, featuring a chunky build with a ruggedised, grippy bumper to shield the phone from drops. The case is also thick enough to provide excellent protection for the camera bump, so you won't need to stress about cracked lenses.

As is traditional for OtterBox's Defender Series cases, a cover adds an extra layer of protection for the device's lonely lightning port (there's also a cover for the ring/silent switch), preventing excess dust, water and other gunk from clogging up the connector. There's also an included belt clip, which might be useful for some, but it adds extra bulk to an already unwieldy case. OtterBox's utilitarian recommendation is to use the clip as a kickstand to prop up your iPhone for easy media consumption, which may or may not be a good idea depending on how you prefer to stream your favourite shows.

The iPhone 12 Pro is one of the most stunning devices on the market, covered with shiny metal and glass. When you slap on the bulky and encompassing Defender Series case, you won't be able to appreciate any of Apple's meticulous design efforts anymore. But, if we're being honest, no one's buying a protective case for its good looks.

The Defender Series case for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro is highly regarded by users, receiving an average review score of 4.7 out of 5 from more than 1,100 ratings on Amazon. Customers commented on the case's high quality and phenomenal protection, with many professionals relying on it to keep their phones safe while on the job. Some complained of the case's lack of MagSafe and Qi charging compatibility, which is a significant loss given the price of the cover.

The OtterBox's $99.95 price tag might be hard to swallow when you've just dropped $1,699 (or more) on a new phone, but if you're looking for something heavy-duty to protect your significant investment, this is the way to go.

Nomad iPhone 12 Pro Rugged Case

Best leather iPhone 12 Pro case

Nomad iPhone 12 Pro Rugged Case
Image: Supplied/Finder

Pros

  • Latest units include MagSafe compatibility
  • Premium Horween leather develops a patina over time

Cons

  • Using MagSafe might mark the leather
  • Premium looks come with a premium price tag

Why we chose it

Californian outfit Nomad has shaken up the leather case market with its latest Rugged Case. Sporting real American leather and stellar drop protection, on top of an impressive feature set, the durable and dependable cover is the best leather iPhone 12 Pro case on the market.

With "Rugged" in the name, you'd expect Nomad's case to be a pretty tough unit. Luckily, it is. With internal shock absorption and a robust TPU bumper, the cover is capable of protecting your iPhone 12 Pro from drops up to 10 feet high (around 3 metres). The case is raised around the phone's edges, stopping your iPhone 12 Pro's beautiful Super Retina XDR display from taking the brunt of any face-first drop. The camera hasn't been overlooked either, with the case's slightly thicker build protecting it from damage. Thankfully, the cover is just thick enough to be ultra-protective while still supporting wireless charging.

Nomad gives you three flavours to choose between, so you can pick either a stealthy "Black", a "Rustic Brown", or a brighter, creamy "Natural" colour to adorn your iPhone 12 Pro. Once you've picked a colour and placed the case on your iPhone 12 Pro, you won't ever have to take it off. While it was absent on the first few units, freshly made Rugged Case models feature Apple's MagSafe technology.

It's very apparent that the attention to detail Nomad puts into its cases is second to none, a fact that becomes crystal clear when you put the leather used by the company under a microscope. Sporting a premium vegetable-tanned Horween leather, the Rugged Case ages like fine wine. Unlike cheaper alternatives, the case won't wear out or flake away. Instead, it'll develop a gorgeous, mature-looking patina. Thanks to that premium Chicago-made leather, no two covers will age the same: after just a few days of use, you'll have your very own one-of-one case.

Nomad's $79.95 asking price for the Rugged Case is a little steep, but it's not at all unreasonable given it's still a whole $9.05 cheaper than Apple's in-house (and frankly not as good) leather case. Assuming you'll keep the case until you retire your iPhone 12 Pro, its impressive quality and great feature set could make it a worthy investment.

Customers loved Nomad's top-tier Rugged Case, awarding it a 4.8 out of 5 rating on Google from more than 80 reviews. Users were pleased with the protective design and slim fit of the cover. Some were a little disappointed by the lack of tactile buttons on the side of the case given the cost, and others were worried the case wasn't quite as high quality as some of the company's older products.

Spigen iPhone 12 Pro Liquid Crystal

Best clear iPhone 12 Pro case

Spigen iPhone 12 Pro Liquid Crystal
Image: Supplied/Finder

Pros

  • Thin and lightweight
  • Compatible with Qi wireless charging

Cons

  • MagSafe compatibility is hit and miss
  • Not the most comfortable

Why we chose it

Clear cases are a quick and easy go-to option for many, and with a phone as stunning as the iPhone 12 Pro, it makes sense to show off some of its beauty while keeping it safe from drops. Spigen's clear cases have long been a fan-favourite across all sides of the smartphone market, and its Liquid Crystal case sticks true to form. With basically everything you could ask for in a budget-conscious package, the Liquid Crystal is the best clear case you can buy for the iPhone 12 Pro.

Like many clear cases, Spigen's Liquid Crystal is thin, light and made from a flexible TPU material. And while it offers very little in the way of extras, it'll do exactly what it's designed to do: keep your new phone safe from the perils of a drop. The Liquid Crystal is still solid and snugly fits on the iPhone 12 Pro. It protects your phone from all angles, with a slight lip around the edges to shield the screen from impacts. There's also a handy camera bump that helps to protect the slightly raised camera array on the iPhone 12 Pro.

Spigen claims that the Liquid Crystal case sports MagSafe compatibility, yet customer reviews suggest that it's not quite as clear-cut as that. While some users reported that MagSafe charging worked just fine with the case, others said it was only possible after they pried the clear cover off their iPhone 12 Pro. If MagSafe compatibility is essential for you, you'll be better off buying Apple's clear case with MagSafe built-in (though, it's a bit of an eyesore).

Another contentious area for the Spigen case is its comfort, with customers seeming to be pretty split on the matter. The Amazon reviews page wasn't short on people complaining of sharp edges surrounding the case, which isn't fantastic given how much everyone uses their phone. Still, plenty raved on about how great the Liquid Crystal case felt in hand. So, your mileage may vary.

The Liquid Crystal comes in at $29.99, making it a middle-of-the-road offering. Still, a few minutes of digging online will find that you can pick up the case for closer to $20, putting it back in the more budget-friendly category.

Spigen's Liquid Crystal case managed to net itself an impressive 4.6 out of 5 rating from more than 5,000 reviews on Amazon, despite some customer gripes. Many buyers were happy with the case's tight fit, satisfying buttons and great protection given its smaller profile. Quite a few weren't so keen on Spigen's marketing text printed on the sides of the case.

Bellroy iPhone 12 Pro Case (3 Card)

Best iPhone 12 Pro wallet case

Bellroy iPhone 12 Pro Case (3 Card)
Image: Supplied/Finder

Pros

  • Stores your essential cards
  • Integrated SIM card and ejector tool slot

Cons

  • Thicker design makes it incompatible with MagSafe and Qi charging
  • Carries just 3 cards

Why we chose it

Bellroy's Phone Case does card-carrying better than other conventional wallet cases by reinventing how cards are stored. With its premium leather and durable polymer construction alongside plenty of neat features, the Australian brand's cover is the best wallet case you can buy for the iPhone 12 Pro.

Offering up a less conventional design, Bellroy's Phone Case fits up to three of your most crucial cards in a small compartment on the back that's neatly accessible via an angled flap. It's not the smallest or most discrete opening on the planet, but its sturdy design means you won't have to worry about breaking it or losing cards, and as a bonus, it can double as a kickstand.

Crafted from rugged polymer and wrapped in supple, premium leather, the Phone Case is as protective as it is stunning. Bellroy takes sustainability seriously, with the company tanning its leather through environmentally conscious protocols, as laid out by the Leather Working Group.

If you want to power up your device with Qi wireless charging, or if slapping on MagSafe accessories is your cup of tea, you'll have to slip the Phone Case off first. Taking the phone out of the case reveals a slot for a spare SIM card (or somewhere to store a SIM while you travel) and even includes space for a SIM ejector tool, so you won't have to look anywhere else when swapping SIM cards in and out of the iPhone 12 Pro.

Bellroy offers up an array of stealthy and vibrant colour options to best suit your tastes. There are eight flavours, to be precise, ranging from Graphite and Black to Cobalt and Coral. Some colours also sport vibrant interiors, with that plush microfibre lining changing from model to model. The popular Basalt colourway will set you back an extra $10, bumping the already pricey case up to a staggering $109.

Bellroy's 3-card leather Phone Case has a fantastic reputation among its users, receiving a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Google from more than two dozen reviews. Buyers raved about the case's quality and were stoked with the good looks of the card cover too. Some did mention the relatively high price of the case as a downside, but others said it was well worth the investment.
