Credit cards with 0% interest rates and bonus point offers shine in the lead up to Christmas. Here’s how you can make the most of them.

If you’re planning to use a credit card for holiday spending, introductory offers could give you a way to save on interest costs or get extra value in the form of rewards. This time of year usually brings a slew of competitive offers, as credit card companies try to get our attention (and our business).

With so many different deals on the market, it’s hard to know where to start and what the fine print really means. So here, we’ve rounded up the top balance transfer, frequent flyer and 0% purchase rate introductory offers based on their dollar value and what you need to do to get them.

Rates and fees are correct as of 6 November 2017 but may change subsequently.

Best 0% balance transfer offer

St.George Vertigo Platinum – online offer

stg-vertigo-platinumIf you want to focus on paying off existing debt, this offer on the St.George Vertigo Platinum gives you 0% on balance transfers for the first 24 months with no balance transfer fee. You’ll also get a $0 annual fee in the first year before the standard fee of $99 p.a. kicks in. In terms of ongoing features, the St.George Vertigo Platinum offers a low rate of 12.74% p.a. (variable) for purchases, complimentary travel insurance, purchase protection insurance and a platinum concierge service.

What do I have to do to get this offer?

Here’s what you need to know to get up to two years interest-free on your balance transfer:

  • Apply online. This balance transfer offer is only available if you apply online.
  • Apply before 13 December 2017. The 0% balance transfer and $0 annual fee promotion ends on 13 December 2017.
  • Request the balance transfer at the time of your application. To get 0% p.a. interest on your balance transfer for 24 months, you need to request your balance transfer at the time of your application. A section for balance transfer requests is included on the application, so make sure you fill out the details of your existing debts there.
  • Eligible debts. You can request a balance transfer from up to three cards as long as they don’t come from St.George, BankSA or Bank of Melbourne.
  • Balance transfer amount. The minimum you can transfer is $200 and you can transfer up to 95% of your available credit limit.

Alternative offer: ANZ Platinum (exclusive)

If you want to pay off debt but also need to use a credit card for some holiday spending, this exclusive offer on the ANZ Platinum gives you 0% for 12 months on balance transfers and 0% for 3 months on purchases. It also offers a $0 annual fee in the first year ($87 thereafter) and complimentary travel insurance.

Best reward or frequent flyer bonus point offer

Qantas Premier Platinum

Qantas-Premier-Plat-250x162This platinum frequent flyer credit card from Qantas currently offers a bonus 75,000 Qantas Points when you spend $3,000 within 90 days of card approval. You’ll also get a reduced annual fee of $149 for the first year ($299 p.a. thereafter) and can take advantage of a 0% p.a. on balance transfers for 15 months. The Qantas Premier Platinum also offers up to 2 points per $1 on eligible spending with Qantas, complimentary travel insurance, two airport lounge invitations per year on your card anniversary and a discount offer on selected domestic companion fares once a year.

What do I have to do to get this offer?

Take note of these details to get 75,000 Qantas Points with this card:

  • Apply by 31 January 2018. You have until the end of January 2018 to take advantage of this offer.
  • Spend criteria. You’ll need to spend at least $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days.
  • Eligible purchases. This includes most everyday purchases but excludes cash advances, balance transfers, refunds, chargebacks and special promotions.
  • Balance transfer details. If you decide to take advantage of the promotional 0% balance transfer offer, you’ll need to include details of your balance transfer request at the time of your application.

Alternative offer: Citi Rewards Platinum

The Citi Rewards Platinum currently offers 100,000 bonus points when you apply by 31 January 2018 and spend $3,000 in the first 90 days of card approval. To put this in perspective, the Citi Rewards website shows that’s enough for $350 worth of gift cards for Flight Centre, three $100 iTunes gift cards or 40,000 Velocity Points. This offer also gives you a reduced annual fee of $49 in the first year, which reverts to a discounted annual fee of $149.

Best 0% purchase or cashback credit card offer

Bankwest Breeze Platinum

Bankwest-Breeze-Plat-cardThe Bankwest Breeze Platinum continues to dominate in this category, offering 0% p.a. on purchases and balance transfers for 13 months (with a 2% balance transfer fee). At the end of the introductory period, any remaining balance will be charged interest at the standard variable purchase rate – currently a competitive 12.99% p.a. The Bankwest Breeze Platinum also offers 0% foreign transaction fees, complimentary travel insurance and an annual fee of $99.

What do I have to do to get this offer?

Take note of these details to get 0% p.a. on purchases for 13 months with the Bankwest Breeze Platinum:

  • Limited time offer. This offer may be withdrawn or changed at any time without notice. Make sure you check the rates and fees listed before you apply so you know you’re getting the 0% introductory rate.
  • New customers only. This offer is only available if you’re a new Bankwest Breeze customer.
  • Introductory purchase period. The 0% p.a. interest rate on purchases is available for 13 months from the date the card is opened, regardless of when a purchase is processed by Bankwest.
  • Eligible purchases. You’ll get 0% p.a. interest on most of your everyday spending during the introductory period. But if you get cash out or make any other cash equivalent transactions, the card’s standard variable cash advance interest rate will apply.
  • Eligible balance transfer debts. If you want to get 0% p.a. for 13 months on a balance transfer, you’ll need to request it at the time of your application. Note that you can only transfer debts from non-Bankwest-branded credit cards and it will charge a one-time fee of 2% of the balance transferred.

Alternative offer: Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer

If you want to make interest-free purchases and earn reward points, this Virgin Australia Velocity Flyer offer gives you 0% p.a. on purchases for 12 months and earns up to 0.66 Velocity Points per $1 spent. It also offers a $129 Virgin Australia Gift Voucher each year, transit accident insurance and a guaranteed pricing scheme.

Getting a new credit card with an introductory offer could help you save on existing debt, make interest-free purchases over the holidays or earn more rewards – as long as you know what you need to do to get the deal.
