We've put together a list of the best stores to shop, curated a range of stylish pieces to suit every budget and even included a list of thought starters to help you work out what type of gift would work best.
Try to buy something that the person doesn't have but needs or wants.
First of all, who are you buying for? A couple that has just moved in together? Maybe someone that has moved out for the first time? Or maybe a family that has just purchased a new home? Understanding who you're buying for will help you find something either needed or wanted.
What to buy as a housewarming gift?
For a single
If someone is moving out for the first time, think basics since they'll need everything. Appliances, cutlery, blankets, towels, coffee mugs – almost anything will be appreciated. If you're looking to spend a bit more, things like towels and bedsheets can be really appreciated. These are expensive items that can be hard to afford for those leaving their family home for the first time.
If they're moving to a new house or apartment, they will most likely have all the necessities, so think about something cute or quirky just for them. Does this person drink a lot of coffee? Try a nice coffee mug. Do they love popcorn? Maybe buy them a popcorn maker. Are they always cold? A nice throw blanket for their bed could work. Do they have a lot of plants? Maybe they could use a decorative watering can. Simple decor items are a good idea too. Vases, fruit bowls, candles, coasters or placemats are little things that can work with what they already own.
For a couple
If a couple is moving in together for the first time, there will be a lot of double-ups with regards to basic items. Often the couple will end up with two sets of cutlery, two sets of plates, two sets of bedsheets and more. So buying these homewares staples and basics is probably not the best idea – they've already got two! What you can do is think about storage ideas. Consider some pretty baskets, a set of shelves, a desk organiser, bookends, containers, jars or anything else to help the couple organise all the stuff in their lives. Also consider little stylish accents like decorative cushions, throws, vases and other items that might help the new home look more like a couple lives there together.
If they're moving to a new house or apartment, couples should already have most of their things organised and have the more necessary living, kitchen and appliance tools. So consider buying those little things they may not necessarily buy for themselves. Perhaps a fancy set of cutting boards? A cheese platter with matching knives? A coffee table book? Cocktail glasses? And if you really can't think of anything, some nice wine never goes astray!
For a family
Families will have a lot of things already. In fact, they'll probably have most of what they need. So try thinking about stylish extras that you can never have too many of. Serving bowls, table runners, placemats, cookbooks, coasters, fancy glasses or even a low-maintenance house plant. You could also think about buying something for the whole family together such as a board game, pool toys or a food hamper. If all else fails, a nice box of chocolates works too.

Important information about this website
finder.com.au is one of Australia's leading comparison websites. We compare from a wide set of banks, insurers and product issuers. We value our editorial independence and follow editorial guidelines.
finder.com.au has access to track details from the product issuers listed on our sites. Although we provide information on the products offered by a wide range of issuers, we don't cover every available product or service.

Products marked as 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. We encourage you to use the tools and information we provide to compare your options.
Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money here.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labelling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
Providing or obtaining an estimated insurance quote through us does not guarantee you can get the insurance. Acceptance by insurance companies is based on things like occupation, health and lifestyle. By providing you with the ability to apply for a credit card or loan, we are not guaranteeing that your application will be approved. Your application for credit products is subject to the Provider's terms and conditions as well as their application and lending criteria.
