The Google Pixel 5 goes on sale in Australia on 15 October – you can read our first impressions here. If you're planning to pick one up at launch, you're going to need a case to go with your shiny new phone. Whether you want the highest levels of protection, ultra premium styling or just a cheap anti-scratch solution, you will find an option in the list below.
As the "official" case for the Google Pixel 5, this first-party accessory is a perfect fit for your phone. The case is made from machine-washable polyester that is made from 70% recycled material. (Fun fact: This includes recycled plastic water bottles.) It also has a microfibre lining and raised-edge design that has been specifically designed to protect against scratches.
The case is built to facilitate wireless charging without having to remove it from the phone (this includes Battery Share reverse charging.) Naturally, all physical buttons and the fingerprint reader also remain accessible. On the downside, $40 is pretty steep for a basic phone case and the screen remains exposed to the elements, unlike a flip case.
There is a choice of four colours available (two more than the actual phone): Basically Black, Blue Confetti, Static Grey and Green Chameleon.
The FZZ Carbon Fibers Case for Google Pixel 5 is one of the cheapest knock-resistant phone cases available online with an RRP of just $5.79 (as of 9 October). The case is constructed of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) which means it is both pliant and durable, with a particular resistance to oil, grease and abrasions.
All phone buttons, ports and functions remain accessible when the case is attached – not always a given at this price point. It purportedly protects against scratches, tears and knocks although we recommend getting something a little sturdier if you're worried about accidental drops. (For what it's worth, the internal groove design will help to absorb shock impacts.)
The package includes a free cleaning kit and comes with an unconditional refund/exchange within 30 days. The case is available in a choice of four colours: black, blue, red and grey.
Genuine leather is the obvious choice if you want a premium phone case. The MInCYB Google Pixel 5 Case fits the bill precisely – it's constructed from high-quality leather with needlework stitching and comes in a choice of two colours: brown (pictured above) or black.
The wallet-style design comes with three roomy card slots and a pouch for your cash. An adjustable horizontal kickstand is also included. The inner casing is constructed from TPU materials. It comes with a one-year quality assurance guarantee.
MInCYB warns that its leather cases should not be used in humid environment for extended periods of time. If you live in a particularly humid part of Australia, this might be something to keep in mind.
OtterBox has a reputation for producing some of the most durable phone cases in the business and the OtterBox Defender for Pixel 5 is no exception. The case boasts a multi-layer construction comprising a solid polycarbonate inner shell, a resilient outer rubber slipcover and raised edges to protect the screen and camera against bumps and scratches.
According to OtterBox, the case can withstand four times as many drops as the military standard. Port covers are also included to prevent dirt and other obstructions. On the downside, it's almost $100 and the bulky black design won't be to everyone's tastes.
Despite its thick casing, the OtterBox Defender for Pixel 5 is compatible with wireless charging. The package also includes an optional belt clip holster that doubles as a hands-free kickstand. For peace of mind, warranty and returns are all handled locally.
If you like the design of the Google Pixel 5 and want to show it off, you're going to need a transparent case. As its name suggests, the ZeKing Anti-Scratch Crystal Clear Case will get the job done. The completely clear case is made from TPU with a tough yet flexible construction. (On the downside, it's not the cheapest Pixel 5 case on the market despite the simple styling.)
The raised edges and four corner bumpers provide added protection against scratches and bumps in the event that you accidentally drop your phone. The dot pattern design allows the case to be easily removed and reattached to the Pixel 5. The casing has bespoke cutouts for all buttons and ports.
A wallet case is a great way to combine your phone with your credit cards and other wallet essentials. If you're looking for an affordable option, CoverON's Wallet Pouch for Pixel 5 is worth checking out.
Constructed from soft-feel synthetic leather, it comes with a trifold design comprising six vertical card holder slots, a transparent ID window and a cash holder pocket. The case is lined with RFID-blocking material to protect your credit cards against theft. The inner rubber coating is shock-resistant although the real protection comes from the wraparound cover – this means your display is less likely to crack during accidental drops. (Handily, the outer cover is secured with a magnetic flap so it won't fly open on the way to the ground.)
The CoverON Wallet Pouch doubles as a kickstand for hands-free media viewing and video calls. In addition to the basic black version pictured above, CoverON offers the case in a wide variety of arresting colours and patterns.
