QLD mask rules explained

As of 6pm AEST Tuesday 29 June, South East Queensland, Townsville (including Magnetic Island) and Palm Island are in a 3-day lockdown.

If you are in one of these impacted areas (or have been at any time since 1am AEST 29 June), you must wear a face mask at all times outside your home.

Although there are some exceptions to this rule. This includes:

  • You are in your car alone or with other household members.
  • You are outdoors alone or with other household members.
  • You are eating or drinking.
  • You are at your usual workplace and can physically distance from others.
  • It is unsafe to do so.

The face mask rule does not apply to children under 12 and those with particular medical conditions or disabilities.

Don't comply? You'll get a $200 fine on the spot.

If you're living in other parts of Queensland, but have been in an impacted area, you'll still need to follow the above mask requirements. Mask wearing is also required when at an airport or on a domestic or international flight departing or arriving in Queensland.

Haven't been to an impacted area? Face masks aren't mandatory, but they are still strongly encouraged (especially on public transport and in places where social distancing is not possible).

Keep in mind that face masks alone will not protect you from COVID-19 – you still need to practise social distancing and washing your hands regularly.
