The world of eyeliner is a confusing one. There seem to be more kinds of eyeliner than you can count: gel liners, pencil liners, brush liners, liquid liners, pot liners, felt tip liners and the list goes on. So how do you work out which one is the right one to give you that polished and crisp eyeliner wing you see on Instagram? There are just too many to buy them all and try them one by one.

We decided it was time for some expert help. Just like our search for the perfect red lipstick, we chatted with four of our favourite makeup artists and asked their opinions on which eyeliner they will always come back to - the ones that they think are the best of the best. Scroll down to read their recommendations.

I mix my liner looks up all the time. The L'Oréal Paris SuperLiner Perfect Slim Liner makes my liner application in the morning super-quick and easy. The tip is so fine you cannot make a mistake!

Hand on heart, my favourite is Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper. It has the most precise brush tip (346 brush hairs to be exact). Plus it's blackest black and transfer-proof!

My favourite liquid eyeliner is Surratt Beauty liquid eyeliner. It's the most amazing liquid liner that is so easy to apply, and the ink is refillable! You get a beautiful, easy and crisp winged liner every time. My favourite pencil liner is Hourglass Obsidian Gel Eyeliner. It is the blackest black, stays put whether it's on the lid or in the waterline. It also has a very thin tip which makes for easy precision.

I love Napoleon Perdis China Doll Eyeliner #Yin & #Yang. When you get used to the product it's a great multi-use liner and lasts all day or night. It can be used as an eyeshadow base to intensify an eye look. The pigment is intense and the product is workable, though when set it won't smudge or melt at all.
