What is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday is traditionally the online sibling of Black Friday. A chance for those who were too full of turkey and stuffing in the US to snag shopping deals without having to wrestle hoards of Walmart-camping lunatics. As online shopping has proliferated around the world, so has the tradition of Cyber Monday.

The popularity of Cyber Monday often stems from the booming media coverage surrounding Black Friday and its prevalence in retail stores. Even before online stores became megaliths that took over the internet, smaller retailers noticed that the Monday after Thanksgiving would show an increase in traffic to their websites. Presumably after people had spent the weekend watching fail videos of shopping stampedes all weekend, online shoppers wanted to find a more dignified way of participating.

Cyber Monday offers have also started to supplant the deals and discounts Black Friday, with many online retailers this year offering better prices to customers in a bid to sway weekend holdout shoppers looking for that one special discount code to float into their inbox.

Last year, US$6.59 billion was spent on Cyber Monday alone. That's a new record, and with a massive number of Australian retailers and smaller sites now participating, this year's Cyber Monday is set to shatter records all over again.
