This week’s bargain phones: iPhone XS, Samsung Galaxy Note9, Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Alex Kidman 29 January 2019 NEWS

How much can you save on the best premium handsets from Apple, Samsung or Huawei?

Each week, we scour the deals available from online retailers to find the bargain phones for those looking to buy outright. Buying your own phone frees you from the shackles of a contract, making it easier to switch providers for a better deal, often even on the same phone network.

Your savings can start from the moment you buy the phone if you compare carefully. We've taken the hard work out of checking prices to find the best bargains on handsets from Apple, Samsung and Huawei's finest phones.

Shopping for the cheapest phone may limit you in terms of your colour options. If we've listed a colour after a phone, the chances are that it's that colour you can get at the listed price.

Prices are as advertised on each vendor's website on 29 January 2019. Availability and pricing are subject to change without notice.

iPhone XS 64GB

The Apple iPhone XS is our pick of the best of Apple's 2019 crop. While it's more pricey than the iPhone XR, you get a better display and a much better camera for what is still premium money in any case.

Apple iPhone XR

Apple's more affordable flagship

The iPhone XR is a solid choice if you want a new iPhone without breaking the bank.

Catch has the lowest price we've spotted this week for a 64GB iPhone XS, although that is for a unit marked as an ex-demonstrator model, so you'd naturally expect a few dollars off for that alone. Still, there's quite a range for the iPhone XS which is unusual when you consider how tight the margins normally are for Apple's flagship phones.

Here are the best deals this week for the iPhone X 64GB from retailers selling to Australian customers.

Samsung Galaxy Note9

We now know that Samsung will show off the Samsung Galaxy S10 at an event a week before Mobile World Congress 2019 on 21 February. Actually, we know a lot about the Galaxy S10 so far, which you can read about here.

Still, until that date, the Samsung Galaxy Note9 remains the company's official flagship. It's a great device across the board, with exceptional battery life, a large vibrant display, and of course the iconic "S-Pen" stylus to cover simple tasks such as note taking, or more complex ones like acting as a remote shutter for the camera.

If you're looking for a phone contract or more detail we've gathered everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy Note9 here.

Six month upgrade cycles for flagships are the norm for Samsung products, so it's no surprise that you can save a fair amount off the "regular" price of the Galaxy Note9 if you shop around.

While the S10 will have some new shiny features, it's also rumoured to carry a much higher price point, so now might be an ideal time to pounce on a Note9 bargain.
