This week’s bargain phones: iPhone 8, Samsung S9 and Huawei P20 Pro

Alex Kidman 13 November 2018 NEWS

Pay less for an iPhone 8, Samsung Galaxy S9 or Huawei P20 Pro in our weekly round-up of the best deals on premium smartphones.

If you're looking for a new or replacement smartphone in the premium space, you can solidly save over the life of that device by purchasing it outright and matching it up with a flexible and affordable SIM-only or prepaid mobile phone plan.

But you can start saving right away if you actively save money on the outright purchase price of the phone from the start.

Every week, we scan the prices for a selection of premium handsets across a range of retailers selling to Australians. There are bargains out there, and we've ferreted them out for you.

Buying the cheapest version of a given handset can often limit you in terms of your colour options. If we've listed a colour after a phone, the chances are that it's that colour you can get at the listed price.

Prices are as advertised on each vendor's website on 13 November 2018. Availability and pricing are subject to change without notice.

iPhone 8 64GB

Apple has plenty of new handsets for you to buy from its 2018 range, but the lowest cost – we can't exactly call it "cheap" – is the iPhone XR.

Apple iPhone XR

Apple's more affordable flagship

The iPhone XR provides Apple's latest processor and operating system in a package that's more affordably priced than the iPhone XS Max.

If you want in on the world of iOS for less, though, you could consider 2017's iPhone 8. It's running on the Apple A11 Bionic, which is still a solid processor, and you get access to iOS upgrades straight away and for a number of years to come.

Want to learn more about the iPhone 8? We've gathered up everything you need to know about the iPhone 8, including contract plans here.

Kogan takes the top spot for price this week, but that's excluding shipping, which is included in Apple's inbuilt price. Given you get the full choice of colours and a directly sourced unit, that's your best bet for an iPhone 8 this week, even though the pricing isn't particularly "special". For just a little more, you could get an iPhone XR instead, so pick carefully.

Here are the best deals this week for the iPhone 8 64GB from retailers selling to Australian customers.

Samsung Galaxy S9

Samsung's big news in the past week was around showing off the prototype for its foldable "Galaxy X" phone at the Samsung Developer Conference. Foldable phones are set to be the next big innovation in smartphones (not to mention tablets and laptops as well) in the next few years. We've gathered together everything you need to know about foldable phones right here.

In the meantime, Samsung still has more regular smartphones to actually sell since there's no announced time frame for the Samsung Galaxy X.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 was Samsung's flagship phone back at Mobile World Congress 2018, and we're only a few months away from MWC 2019 and the expected arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S10 series. That means that bargains on the Galaxy S9 should be arriving thick and fast.

If you're looking for a phone contract or more details, we've gathered everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S9 here.

It's a close battle, and there are some great deals around, but DWI's deal is just a little less than comparable offerings through either Kogan or Amazon this week.

Huawei P20 Pro

Huawei's made a huge splash in the mobile space in 2018, more recently with the Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro

Huawei's flagship camera phone

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro combines the power of Huawei's own Kirin 980 chip, an exceptional battery and a class-leading triple camera array.

Huawei's exceptional smartphone year kicked off with the Huawei P20 Pro, a phone with a great camera in its own right, especially if you're a fan of moody monochrome shots. Its position as the older flagship also means that it's seen some serious price drops in recent times.

Kogan has, hands-down, the best deal on a Huawei P20 Pro you'll find this week at under $1,000 with free shipping and a flip case thrown in for good measure.
