This week’s bargain phones: iPhone X, Samsung S9 or Huawei P20 Pro

Alex Kidman 16 October 2018 NEWS

Save on the iPhone X, Galaxy S9 or Huawei P20 with our round-up of the week's finest deals on premium smartphones.

If you want a premium phone, you're going to have to dig deep into your wallet to get one. That's the nature of premium phone shopping, but the dent it leaves in your finances doesn't have to be prohibitive.

There's intense competition in the smartphone world to grab your buying dollar, and that means shopping around and comparing is very wise.

Every week, we check the prices for a selection of popular handsets across a range of Australian vendors to find the best deals. This does often limit your colour options, as specific hues end up with price cuts or price premiums. If there's a colour listed next to a handset, it's usually because that specific hue is on sale.

Prices are as advertised on each vendor's website on 15 October 2018. Availability and pricing are subject to change without notice.

iPhone X 64GB

The iPhone X only had a single year at the top of Apple's product tree, and while that's not an unusual state of affairs given its annual refresh cycle, it's notable because Apple's removed it from its own sales channel entirely. The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus live on as somewhat more affordable handsets, but not the iPhone X.

That means if you want one – or can't face the stiff asking price of the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max – you'll have to buy one from a third-party retailer.

With such a strong focus on larger handsets, small flagships with power are hard to find. If you're a happy Samsung user but you still want power, the Samsung Galaxy S9 is your best bet. Since it's a phone with six months on the clock since its release, we're also seeing lots of really good deals at the moment.

Huawei P20 Pro

Huawei will shortly announce its new flagship Mate 20 range, more or less replacing the Huawei P20 Pro as its top-tier premium phone. Huawei's P-series phones have a serious style component, while the Mate phones tend to be more businesslike, so there's still plenty of appeal – not to mention the allure of that fabulous triple camera – in the Huawei P20 Pro.
