This week’s bargain phones: iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9+, Huawei P20 Pro

Buy your next outright Apple, Samsung or Huawei smartphone with our weekly round-up of the best bargains.

More and more Australians are getting wise to the benefits of buying a phone outright. With no forced attachment to a telco you have a phone you can keep or sell as your mood suits. And the easy ability to take advantage of special deals on SIM-only postpaid or prepaid mobile phone plans can maximise your savings.

It's not all about savings on your phone plan, though. If you're smart, you'll shop around to get the best possible price for your phone. But who has the time for all that cross-checking of prices to make sure you're not paying too much?

We do! Each week, we check the prices online merchants are charging for a range of premium smartphones, finding the best bargains along the way.

We've selected the lowest cost version of each handset. That often limits your colour choices. Some vendors do put a premium on certain colours, or a discount on others. If there's a colour listed, it's usually because that specific hue is on sale.

Prices are as advertised on each vendor's website on 21 August 2018. Availability and pricing are subject to change without notice.

iPhone X 64GB

Apple's iPhone X represents the company's first big shift away from its "traditional" iPhone designs, and it's quite likely that we'll see more of the same when its successors arrive in the next two months.

Apple phones typically keep their value over a longer span, which means that hunting down a bargain is hard work, and you're often only saving a smaller amount relative to the official prices of Android handsets. Still, a saving is a saving, and you don't have to pay full retail price.

Keen to learn more about the iPhone X? We've gathered up everything you need to know about the iPhone X, including contract plans here.

Samsung Galaxy S9+

The Galaxy S9+ still sits as Samsung's flagship Galaxy S-series handset, even if it's somewhat eclipsed by the imminent arrival of the Galaxy Note9 on our shores. Samsung's pre-order deal for that phone is pretty tasty if you're after saving on storage, but that's not quite the same as an actual price cut.

Huawei P20 Pro

All signs point to Huawei revealing a new premium handset sometime around October, most probably the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Huawei's Mate lines have typically been larger-screened productivity devices, but if you fancy something more stylish with a stellar camera, you really can't look past the Huawei P20 Pro.

The Huawei P20 Pro is already pretty affordable off the bat, but we're seeing more price drops as the Mate 20 launch looms closer.
