Australia’s first capsule hotel for solo travellers is coming to Sydney

And it's emerging inside the infamous Bar Century on George Street.

Set to reinvent itself and reopen mid-late November this year as a cocktail bar/night club with gaming facilities, the new Bar Century will be spread across three levels with the country's first capsule hotel on its third. Up until its closure in February 2016, Bar Century was a city favourite known for its sticky floors, cheap drinks and (let's be honest) rowdy crowd. Following the introduction of lockout laws which cut late-night visits on Fridays and Saturdays, a downturn in trade forced the popular establishment to close.

The capsule accommodation, which will be called The Capsule Hotel, will be the first of its kind in Australia. A far cry from your dingy CBD hostel, the concept aims to provide budget accommodation in Sydney for visitors looking for a more luxurious backpacker experience.

The interior fit out and design is being taken care of by Giant Design Consultants (New Shanghai, Din Tai Fung Westfield, Pablo & Rusty's, Red Lantern on Riley) and will draw inspiration from capsule hotels in Japan while still retaining the vintage feel of the historical building it's housed in.

When complete, The Capsule Hotel will feature 72 pod-shaped sleeping cabins of varying sizes and will initially feature unisex rooms, although a female-only room may become available pending demand. Each pod have its own LED screen and entertainment system, Wi-Fi and mood-lighting. 24-hour access to the accommodation and a secure enclosure within your pod will make it the perfect respite for the solo traveller.

Similar to a hostel, the capsule will offer communal facilities such as a kitchen space, lounge area, rooftop terrace and individual bathrooms.

Giant Design Consultants has released a number of concept visuals (pictured below) for both the bar and hotel and from what we see, it's looking like big changes are happening for our old water hole. In a good way.
