'Tis the season to be spending!

Australians will be spreading plenty of Christmas cheer this December, as new research estimates almost $10 billion will be spent splurging on gifts this year.

Australians are anticipated to fork out $9.77 billion on Christmas presents over the next few months - equivalent to $119 per adult - almost one third (28%) more than last year's total, according to a survey conducted by finder.com.au.

The study revealed Christmas shopping began early for more than five million Aussies, buying presents for friends and family during or before October.

On average, Australians intend to spend $539 on Christmas gifts this year, up from $419 in 2015.

Christmas shopping claustrophobia is likely to peak during the first week of December, with one in five (20.7%) Aussies planning to hit stores as summer begins.

Women, on average, are more generous than their male counterparts when it comes to buying gifts during the silly season. However, it's men aged 35-54 from Western Australia who'll spend the most this Christmas, earmarking $936 for gifts, two fifths (42%) more than the national average.

Men aged 55+ from Queensland are forecast to spend the least ($278) on gifts for others this Christmas.

New South Wales residents are expected to be the most generous this year, planning to spend $607 per adult. West Australians aren't far behind, setting aside $575 per adult.

Queenslanders are getting to the shops earlier than those in other states, while a small contingency of Victorians (5%) are happy to leave things until the last minute (Christmas Eve).
