  • Unlimited medical expenses overseas
  • Dental expenses
  • Up to $15,000 luggage and personal item coverage for each trip
  • Rental excess up to $4,000
  • Included snow sport cover for trips to New Zealand
  • Included cruise cover

Some additional benefits include:

  • Cover for 12 months from the starting date of the first trip
  • A spouse or accompanying partner can be added at any time during the cover (for an additional cost)

Australian Travel Plan

Suited to domestic travel, this plan also includes medical benefits if you’re cruising on Australian waters. Under the Australian plan, you are covered for:

  • Cancellation expenses
  • Emergency accomodation expenses
  • Emergency medical expenses when cruising within Australian waters
  • Luggage and travel documents up to $4,000
  • Personal liability
  • Rental car excess up to $5,000

Alternative plans

Budget travel plan

This plan provides the minimum cover for overseas trips. You're covered for

  • Unlimited medical and dental expenses overseas
  • Cancellations up to $15,000
  • Luggage and travel documents
  • Travel delays
  • Personal liability
  • Rental car excess waiver up to $2,000

Inbound Travel Plan

This option covers travel by Non-Australian residents coming into Australia.

  • Cancellation expenses
  • Loss or theft of luggage
  • Rental vehicle excess up to $1,000

How do I apply for Australian Unity travel insurance?

Here’s how to go about applying for travel cover with Australian Unity.

  • What do you need cover for? Make sure that the plan you choose covers every aspect of your holiday, from your activities to your destination and the number of people in your party.
  • Do you need cover for just yourself? Is the cover for just you or do you need cover for a travelling companion? Note that both singles and doubles policies cover dependent children.
  • Do you have a pre-existing medical condition? Australian Unity requires that you complete travel appraisal form for if your are over 80 years of age or if you have certain medical conditions.
  • Do you want to get your policy online or on the phone? You can get a quote online or you can contact Australian Unity via phone to apply.

How do I make a claim with Australian Unity?

If you an incident happens, take the following steps:

  1. Inform the police or authorities. This will allow you to get a police report or some sort of written report.
  2. Take down all the details of the incident. This includes the details of witnesses.
  3. Call QBE as soon as possible. QBE is the underwriter of Australian Unity. QBE will let you know if you need to fill out a claim form.

If you need to make a claim

  1. Complete a claim form if it's required.
  2. Provide all neccessary information e.g. receipts of items.
  3. Pay the excess.

Question: What do I do if my luggage has been lost or stolen?

  • The first thing to do is report the loss or theft to the police in that country and obtain a written statement detailing the loss or theft. Be sure to include all items missing. Following that, get in touch with QBE to file a claim.

Question: Who do I speak with if I don’t like the way my claim was handled?

  • You can get in touch with one of the Customer Care Unit who will try and resolve the dispute. If you’re still unhappy, the matter will be referred to the internal dispute resolution department. You can also escalate your complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Question: Can I cancel my Australian Unity policy if I’m not happy with it?

  • You have a cooling-off period of 21 days during which you can cancel your policy. Provided you haven’t already started your holiday or filed a claim, you’ll receive a full refund of your premium. Cooling off periods don't apply for trip extensions.

Question: Who underwrites Australian Unity travel insurance policies?

  • Australian Unity travel insurance is underwritten by QBE Insurance Limited.
