How can you tell if furniture is made in Australia?
There are a number of ways you can tell that a product is made in Australia. The easiest way is to see if it sports the green Australia-made triangle. This is an official certification that the product has been certified as being locally made. You can see a list of Australian-made products on this website.
Even if your product doesn't have this symbol on it, it could still be made in Australia. This is because, in order to obtain this symbol, a creator has to apply and pay a licence fee to bear the stamp, which might not be viable for smaller makers. In this case, look at the product's specification for details on where it was produced or country of origin. You can also look at the About Us section in the brand's personal website to see its manufacturing process or contact the company directly to clarify where the product is made.
Why buy Australian-made furniture?
It might be very tempting to purchase a product purely on how it looks or the price tag, but buying Australian-made furniture has numerous benefits:
Supports the local economy. Australia's economy cannot thrive without you and your purchases. By spending money on Australian-made items, you're keeping our economy in good check – and keeping local businesses and jobs alive.
Uses local timbers. Good quality furniture that is made in Australian often uses timbers sourced locally. And while Australia isn't immune to unsustainable or illegal practices, we do adhere to FSC certification standards. When purchasing your piece, The Wilderness Society recommends you check to make sure it's FSC certified and plantation grown to ensure it's as sustainable as possible.
Faster shipping times. Furniture is bulky and heavy, and if you're importing it from overseas, you can bet you'll be waiting a while for it to arrive. By purchasing locally, you're likely looking at a shorter delivery time. Or, you can even pick up the item yourself. Delivery costs are also estimated to be less.
Is furniture made in Australia more expensive?
The short answer is that it can be. Contributing factors to higher costs are wage rates and the quality of materials.
That being said, it might still be worth investing in an Australian-made piece. On top of supporting local manufacturers, you could benefit from faster shipping times, cheaper shipping rates, no international credit card fees or import taxes and easier returns and exchanges should anything be wrong with your purchase. Considering furniture is typically a high-ticket item, these could bring with them a lot of peace of mind as well as avoiding any unexpected costs.

Products marked as 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money here.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labelling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
