In the case of COVID-19, the World Health Organization has recently changed its advice on whether people should wear masks. The advice now is that masks should be worn in public where social distancing is not possible to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Under Victorian regulations, it's mandatory for everyone to wear face masks or coverings in public (face shields don't qualify). Non-compliance can result in a fine of $200. In NSW, face masks are now encouraged, but not mandatory. More details in Finder's complete guide to face mask rules in Australia.

  • Look for the Australian Made triangle: Recognised by the majority of Australians, this is by far the easiest way to tell if something is locally made.
  • Search for the term "Made In" in the description or image: Brands often include where its items are made or manufactured in the product description. If it doesn't, take a look at the image and see if you can suss out a tag that declares where it's made.
  • Check the "About Us" section: Reading the brand's story can tell you a lot about the manufacturer, including where its items are designed and created.
  • Contact the brand: Still can't figure it out? Hit the "Live Chat", "Contact Us" or social buttons and ask them personally.

Why buy Australian made masks?

Many Australian companies are doing it tough due to the pandemic, and to make ends meet, they've pivoted to create items that are in high demand.

For textile brands, this has come in the form of face masks.

By purchasing Aussie made masks, you'll be keeping these businesses afloat and their staff employed.

Buying masks that are made in Australia means you'll likely receive them faster than if you purchased them from overseas. Plus, many local brands offer the option to have your mask custom made, so you can style it to suit your personality.
