Frequently asked questions about Australia Day flight deals

How can I secure a good flight deal on Australia Day?

Be flexible with dates. Flight sales are often offered for specific time periods and you're likely to find the cheapest fares for a mid-week, early morning departure.

Avoid adding additional luggage and in-flight meals. If you find a good deal via a budget airline, it's worth weighing up whether the cost of additional baggage and meals is worth the extra dollars. A way around this is to pack light and bring your own snacks along for the journey.

Fly outside of peak periods. Flying during seasonal periods such as Christmas, Easter and the school holidays will likely put a bigger dent in your wallet compared to if you were flying outside of peak periods. You're more likely to score a good deal when flying during off-peak periods.

Set up a price alert. Skyscanner and Kayak allow you to set up a price alert for specific destinations. They'll shoot you an email alert if your selected route drops in price.

What should I know about booking flights during COVID-19?

Due to COVID-19, you may have some hesitations when booking flights. On the bright side, airlines have been adapting to changes and updating their policies to ensure travellers can still fly with confidence. Here are some things to consider when booking flights:

Flying with border restrictions. Some airlines still have flights to and from cities and countries with border restrictions. Although international travel is currently banned for Australians, you can take your chances and book flights. Be sure to consider booking fares with flexibility in case your travel plans can't go ahead.

Flexible bookings. Many airlines are now offering flexibility for travellers who may be affected by border closures. Be sure to check if you're eligible for fee-free changes, such as a date change or free cancellation with either a flight credit or refund.

Wearing a mask. Wearing a mask is now mandatory on domestic Australian flights. Some airlines are providing flyers with a hygiene pack including antibacterial wipes and a mask. It's important to wear a mask as you board your flight, so don't risk waiting to see if a mask is provided once you get to your assigned seat.

Pre-departure declaration forms. Before booking, be sure to check if you need to fill out a pre-departure declaration form before arriving at your destination. Depending on current border restrictions and if you've recently visited a hotspot, you may be denied boarding.

Limited contact during check-in, bag drop and service. To reduce the level of contact between travellers and staff, airlines are allowing travellers to check in online or via an airline's app. If you run into any issues while checking in, there will still be staff available to assist in person. Some high-touch surfaces, such as entertainment and magazines, may be removed. Additionally, prepared meals may not be available on your flight.

Travel insurance. You won't be covered for COVID-related claims domestically or internationally, but you will still be covered for theft, injuries and accidents. Travel insurance can be purchased for both domestic and international trips.
