Strewth! What Australians blow their credit cards on during the holidays
Not everyone spends their money on tombstones and hookers, but we're partial to a shopping spree.
The Christmas holiday season often sees us exercising our credit cards, but what are we spending on? A finder.com.au survey of more than 1,000 Australians suggests that shopping sprees top the list, followed by luxury accommodation and expensive restaurants. We're also fond of flashing the plastic for one-off experiences like concerts. Here's the full breakdown in handy chart form:
Given the Boxing Day sales, it's no surprise that many Aussies choose to indulge over this period. Our favourite splurge examples that surfaced in the survey included hookers (we hope everyone involved is single), cheese (cheese is always a sensible choice) and a tombstone (we're really unclear on how getting a tombstone qualifies as an indulgence, frankly). If you're keen to keep away from the tombstone for as long as possible, make sure you have the right travel insurance.
If you have overspent on your credit card, don't despair; there are lots of 0% balance transfer deals around right now, which can help get your debt under control. With a balance transfer, you can shift existing credit card debt to an account which charges 0% interest for a fixed period of time, making it easier to pay off the remaining balance.
