Discover the best ways to get around Auckland, so you can dive into all of the city’s sites.
Auckland's city centre sits between two motorways and the water, providing easy access to other destinations in New Zealand by road and ferries from the city's wharves. It's only about 2km long (from the motorway to the water), so it is manageable to get around on foot, however it is a hilly city.
To make getting around easier, there are multiple transport options for visitors.
Auckland public transport
Types of transport. City buses, trains and ferries operate under Auckland Transport (AT). If you're hoping to go out to the wineries at Waiheke Island or the reserve at Rangitoto Island, you can hop on a ferry at the ferry terminal in the city. If you're hoping to go further afield, there are InterCity buses available from the Sky City terminal and Naked Buses available from near the ferry wharves. These buses aren't part of the Auckland Transport system, but can help you with day trips to destinations that are just a couple hours away.
Paying for transport. You can use the AT HOP card to pre-pay for travel on buses, trains and ferries. Additionally, buses accept cash. You can purchase ferry tickets on the ferry or before boarding. Cash is not accepted on trains, but you can buy tickets from top-up machines before boarding.
Best apps for getting around. The AT Mobile app lets you create trips using transit, notifies you when the bus is one stop away and reminds you to get off when it is close to your stop.
From the airport: The easiest public transport option from Auckland Airport is the SkyBus. It's $17 one way and runs 24-hours a day, with multiple drop-off locations in the CBD.
Taxis and Uber
Taxi. Taxis can be pre-booked over the phone, with an app or hailed from the side of the road. You can find taxis outside the arrivals area of the international terminal by door eight. Fares range from $75 to $90 to the city.
Uber. Uber is available throughout Auckland, including the airport. Airport to the city centre fares are $38-$51.
Auckland car hire rental companies
Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Thrifty are all located in the international terminal next to arrivals on the ground floor. You can pre-book a car or book on arrival.
For a driver and car at a cheaper price, Uber is available to and from the Auckland airport. A $4 airport pickup fee is added.
