The best-performing stocks in ASX trading today were Iress (IRE, up 15.9%) and Liontown Resources (LTR, up 9.8%).

Top movers on the ASX Thursday 10 June 2021

Software provider Iress (IRE) was the standout mover on the ASX today. Shares in the company rose 15.9% to $12.69.

"Rumours that an unknown entity was seeking to buy up Iress shares in a takeover bid sent the company's stock price soaring in its biggest jump since 2018," said Finder's investments editor Kylie Purcell.

"According to unnamed sources in an Australian Financial Review article Thursday morning, investment firm Barrenjoey had been scouting IRE stock on behalf of a client. Reuters sources also confirmed that Barrenjoey and JPMorgan had been looking to buy shares at about the $13.20 level, a 20% premium to its closing price Wednesday."

"While Iress denied knowing anything about the offers, the market clearly remained optimistic."

Iress offers software commonly used by financial services firms. It's particularly well known for its stock price data on investment apps and websites.

Also performing strongly was Liontown Resources (LTR), a lithium mining company.

It rose 9.8% to close at $0.67.

"Lithium stocks have been riding the electric vehicle wave over the last 12 months and Liontown is no exception," said Finder's investments editor Kylie Purcell."

"Shares in the company have risen more than 440% from a year ago as optimism around the future of EVs and battery storage solutions increases."
