ASOS makes big move in sustainability with recyclable packaging

ASOS is reducing the brand's impact of its packaging on the environment.

According to Sustainability Victoria, each year Australians throw away 1.9 million tonnes of packaging. That's enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground nine times over.

This isn't groundbreaking news. The amount of packaging and excessive plastic delivered alongside your online shopping has grown to become an increasingly larger topic when discussing sustainable shopping.

Thankfully, a lot of brands are stepping up and adjusting their business model to aid the environment, and we can now add ASOS to the list.

The online retailer is making a significant change to the way it packages its items and has introduced new recyclable mailing and garment bags. These bags are made from 65% recycled materials, a major improvement on the current 25% bags ASOS uses and are 100% recyclable.

In all honesty, ASOS has always been a retailer trying to improve its carbon footprint. The brand introduced a sustainability filter to its website, giving shoppers the option to purchase only sustainable brands. This included brands using vegan-friendly materials and recycled activewear collections.

In 2019, ASOS joined the Global Plastic Pact, which meant the retailer was committing to creating reusable bags and it's really great to see them following through on promises.

They also pledged to completely get rid of single-use plastic bags by the year 2025, assuring that all plastic it uses will be 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable in the next five years.

Can we get a second round of applause, please?

Last year, ASOS sent out a whopping 72 million orders.

With numbers as high as that, you can imagine the positive effect this change will have. However, it also shows the pretty terrible effect fast fashion can have on the environment if brands don't make an effort to reduce their carbon footprint.

This new movement is still in the process of rolling out but we're really loving that this is becoming a topic that's under the spotlight and that we're seeing brands like ASOS following through on their promises.
