Apple’s iOS 10.1 adds portrait mode for iPhone 7 Plus users
Apple has released iOS 10.1 for all compatible devices, but it’s iPhone 7 Plus users who will see the most immediate impact.
Apple has been quite busy on the iOS 10 front, releasing a number of minor point fixes for specific bugs. iOS 10.1, which is available now for qualifying devices, still has bug fixes under the hood, but it also brings with it a number of new features.
The headline act for iOS 10.1 is only available to owners of Apple’s shiny new iPhone 7 Plus. It’s the portrait effect shown off at the launch keynote, which Apple promised would be available before the end of the year. If you’re an iPhone 7 Plus user it’s available now, although selecting Portrait mode within the camera app does reveal that Apple considers it to still be in Beta. If nothing else, that should cover them for any iffy photos it may produce, using both the wide and zoom lenses at once to create interesting bokeh effects on your pictures.
iOS 10.1 also brings public transport for Apple Maps in Japan, specifically Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya if you’re planning to travel soon. There are also tweaks to the way Messages are displayed, new pace option for Apple Watch wearers working out in wheelchairs and claimed improvements in Bluetooth and AirPlay connectivity.
How can I upgrade to iOS 10.1?
If you’re running an iOS 10 capable device you may be prompted to upgrade, but if not, you can head to Settings>General>Software Update to initiate the upgrade process. Be aware that on slower connections the download may take some time, and during the actual upgrade you won’t be able to use your iOS device.
