Streaming service makes its first price increase since launch.

Streaming provider Apple TV Plus has lifted the price of its service.

Apple TV Plus is the latest streaming service to increase its price in the last 12 months.

It comes after 2 of Stan's packages increased, BINGE's standard plan went up, Kayo raised its cost back in April and Netflix also put up its prices in November 2021.

How much is the price increase for Apple TV Plus?

Previously $7.99 a month, Apple TV Plus has now increased to $9.99 a month.

That's a 25% increase on the previous price and the first time its price has gone up since launching in 2019.

Unlike some other streaming services that have multiple tiers, Apple TV Plus only has a single tier and price point, so you are unable to switch to a lower-priced tier.

There are no other changes to the service, as it still comes with a 7-day free trial.

Is Apple TV Plus still good value for money?

With its $2 price increase, Apple loses its position as one of the cheaper major streaming services on the market.

Services like AMC Plus, Paramount Plus, BritBox and others now cost less than Apple TV Plus, while it is only 1c cheaper than the lowest-priced tiers on Stan and BINGE.

Apple TV Plus is also known for a quality over quantity approach, so doesn't have as many titles as other major streaming services.

As you can see below, Apple TV Plus has the fewest titles when comparing major streaming services.

With 141 titles at now $9.99 a month, that works out to be 7c a title.

That sounds cheap, but if you compare to say Prime Video, with 11,338 titles for $6.99 a month, that comes to be only 0.06c a title.

Other services include Disney Plus for 0.36c a title or BINGE for 0.32c a title.

We suggest though you check out our guide to all the TV shows and movies on Apple TV Plus so you can see exactly what is on the service and if it's something you'd like to subscribe to.

Titles include recent release Shantaram, the critically acclaimed Severance, Emmy award winner Ted Lasso and the Oscar winner CODA.

Although the cost per title might be higher than some streaming services, Apple TV Plus may feature more of the content you want to watch.

Can I get Apple TV Plus for free?

One way to save money on Apple TV Plus is to get it for free.

There is of course the service's 7-day free trial, but that only relieves payment for a week.

You can get 3 months free of Apple TV Plus when you buy an eligible new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV or Mac.

Of course that means you would actually need to hand over a large amount of money for your new device, which defeats the purpose of getting Apple TV Plus for free.

But, if you were already planning on upgrading, it could be good to take full advantage of this offer.

You won't avoid the price rise indefinitely, but you could at least delay it 3 months.

There is only 1 offer per Apple ID and only 1 offer per family if you're part of a family sharing group, regardless of the number of devices you or your family purchase.

The offer is also not available if you or your family have previously accepted an Apple TV Plus 1-year or 3‑month free offer.

What else can I get for the old price?

If you have no wiggle room and can still only spend $7.99 a month, there are other options for you.

The likes of Prime Video, Acorn TV, hayu and Shudder are only $6.99 a month each.

That means switching to one of those services could save you $1 a month.

MGM is only $4.99 a month while you can get Lionsgate Plus for $3.99 a month.

The latter pair also require a subscription to Prime Video, so if you already subscribe to that service you could add one of them.

But if you don't already subscribe to Prime Video, a subscription to that plus the cost of one of those totals more than $7.99 a month.

Some of the above are niche services though, meaning they only focus on a certain style of programming.

You'll need to compare what they offer and if they're right for you.
