Apple offers free repairs for iPhone 6s battery woes

If your iPhone 6s unexpectedly shuts down all the time, Apple will fix it for free.

In the wake of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 battery issue, phone manufacturers have to be looking a little nervously at their own handsets, although the practical (and thankful) reality is that smartphone fires are still actually a very rare event.

Amidst reports that there may be a battery issue affecting iPhone 6s handsets that causes them to randomly shut down, Apple has kicked off a repair program that would see affected handsets repaired at no cost. It’s at pains to point out that "this is not a safety issue and only affects devices within a limited serial number range that were manufactured between September and October 2015".

If you’ve got an affected phone and it randomly shuts down, it may be the battery at fault, in which case Apple will replace the battery free of charge through its own stores or Apple authorised resellers.

This is separate to the repair program it announced last week for older iPhone 6 Plus devices where repeated drops could cause issues with the multi-touch capability of the display. In that case, Apple will charge a flat $228.95 fee for repair, whereas this battery replacement is a free service. Apple does note that if there is other damage to the handset, any repairs for that may incur an additional cost.
