Explained: The nitty gritty of Anthem’s classes
Get the skinny on Anthem's robust javelin classes, weapons and ultimate abilities here.
We recently had a chance to sit down with Thomas Singleton, producer of BioWare's Anthem, in order to get a deep dive look into the all-important classes available in the game. Not all javelin Exosuits are created equal, it seems.
For those of you who haven't been tracking Anthem on their mini-radar, it was announced two years ago and it's... how can we put this delicately, not dissimilar to Destiny. At least on the surface. When you stop judging the book by its cover, and all the in-game flying and verticality opens up, Anthem undeniably reveals itself to be so much more. In fact, we'd even go so far as to say it's becoming the sleeper hit of 2019.
Here's what we learned about Anthem's class options:
Ranger weapons, melee and ultimate
The Ranger is your Average Joe class. What does that entail exactly? We've scouted ahead so you know what to expect.
Ranger: Jack of all upgrades
The Ranger class is your all-rounder in Anthem. The easy choice for green thumbs, if you will. Every javelin (the exosuit your playable character pilots) can equip two weapons every time they roll out. What makes the Ranger so accessible is that it can equip any weapon type it pleases with the exception of heavy weapons, which are exclusive to the Colossus class (more on that in a moment).
Ranger Javelin melee: Shocking CQC
Rangers are easily the most shocking lot of javelins in Anthem. A Ranger utilises the trusty cattle prod as its melee weapon; an electrified baton that pummels enemies into a stunned state.
Ranger Javelin Grenade Gear
Like most games of its ilk, Anthem allows players to toss a toasty pineapple into the mix when needed. Ranger javelins can customise their grenades in the field, giving them more bang for their buck.
Here are just a few of the grenade types you can toy with as a Ranger:
- Frag Grenade
- Inferno Grenade
- Frost Grenade
- Seeker Grenades
- Sticky Bomb
Ranger Javelin Assault Launcher Gear
The Ranger javelin has a sidearm assault launcher attached to its wrist that fires off a range of powerful beams and bombs.
- Homing missile
- Energy Pulse
- Spark Beam
- Venom Darts
- Blast Missile
Ranger Javelin Support Gear
- Bulwark Point
- Muster Point
Ranger Javelin Ultimate Ability
Multi-Target Missile Battery
With Anthem's Ranger class, you can deploy the multi-target missile to home in on tricky opponents. As a great mech pilot once said, justice rains from above.
Colossus weapons, melee and ultimate
Colossus Javelin Weapons: A heavy undertaking
While the Colossus can't wield as many weapons as the Ranger, it is the only class buff enough to carry the game's heavy weapons. It also has access to your smaller pistols and SMGs for situations when going big isn't the answer.
Colossus Javelin Melee Ability: Colossus, smash
The Colossus uses its larger frame to dive-bomb enemies from above with an earth-shattering ground pound. It also uses it to beat down on enemies in close range combat and has the potential to knock down enemies.
Colossus Javelin Ordnance Launcher
Colossus can use its huge shoulder-mounted cannon to deal out damage with a range of mortars and other projectiles:
- High Explosive Mortar
- Burst Mortar
- Firewall Mortar
- Lightning Coil
- Shock Coil
Colossus Javelin Heavy Assault Launcher
Even the Colossus's wrist launcher can be kitted out with some devastating projectiles:
- Heavy Cannon
- Flame Thrower
- Flak Cannon
- Acid Spitter
Colossus Support Gear
As Anthem's tank class, the Colossus is capable of drawing a crowd and deflecting oncoming attacks with its support abilities:
- Deflector Pulse
Colossus Javelin Ultimate Ability
Taking home the Michael Bay award for excellence in explosions, the Colossus uses its ultimate Siege Cannon ability to clear crowds of smaller enemies and deal big damage against beefier bosses.
Storm class: Weapons, melee and ultimate
The Storm javelins melee attack doubles as a sort of flashbang; dealing out close-quarter damage while stunning the crowd, giving the Lancer and their crew a moment to reposition when things get a little dicey.
Storm Kinesis Gear Abilities
If Colossus is Anthem's tank, then Storm is surely the closest thing it has to a mage. At any time, it can equip three different Kinesis abilities allowing it to release offensive elemental energy attacks.
- Storm Javelin Blast Seals
- Lightning Strike
- Ice Storm
- Flame Burst
- Rime Blast
- Living Flame
Storm Javelin Focus Seal
- Hoarfrost Shard
- Ball Lightning
- Glacial Beam
- Arc Burst
Storm Javelin Support Seals
Storm's support abilities are all about rapid-fire DPS and dodging enemy attacks. Storm can create a helpful diversion when your team is getting flanked.
- Wind Wall
Storm Javelin Ultimate Ability
Storm's ultimate ability is a fireworks display of frost, electricity and fire that ends with a devastating finale.
Interceptor: Weapons, melee and ultimate ability
Interceptor Melee Ability: When one dagger won't do
The roguish Interceptor uses double-bladed daggers in close quarters to deliver a punishing rush of attacks that can be chained.
Interceptor J Technique Gear
Just like its fellow javelins, Interceptor has a long list of support, assault and strike abilities that can be deployed from its exosuit. Details on the Interceptor's abilities aren't as fleshed out as the other three, but here's the list of abilities it can use:
Interceptor Javelin Assault Systems
- Seeker Glaive
- Acid Bomb
- Cryo Glaive
- Cluster Mine
- Spark Dash
Interceptor Javelin Strike Systems
- Star Strike
- Plasma Star
- Nova Strike
- Tempest Strike
- Corrosive Spray
Interceptor Javelin Support Systems
- Target Beacon
- Rally Cry
Interceptor Ultimate Ability
Old Johnny Two Knives uses its blades to rush through enemies in a speedy, supercharged ultimate attack. Interceptor is all about dealing out damage fast and its ultimate ability follows suit.
