The American Express Westpac Altitude Platinum bundle's introductory offer presents more than enough points to book an overseas flight. For example, you could use 75,000 Qantas Points to fly from Sydney to San Francisco (72,000 points) in Premium Economy or return from Melbourne to Auckland in business class (36,000 points each way).

While the earn rate for domestic purchases on the American Express is competitive at 1 point per $1 spent, the 0.5 points / $1 spent rate on the Mastercard is less so. You’ll need to factor in how much you spend and where to evaluate the potential rewards you could redeem against the bundle’s annual fee.

How to apply

If you're an existing Westpac Altitude Platinum - Qantas card customer, you can apply for the American Express card if you've been invited via Online Banking, email or post. If you were invited, you should've received a promotional code which you can use to apply. If you still don't have the card, you can only apply for the American Express card if you also apply for the Mastercard.

You can apply online and the application should only take around 10 minutes. For this two-card bundle, you submit only one application to Westpac and then your information is passed on to American Express. Before you apply, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements and have the necessary documents on hand:

Eligibility criteria

  • New customer. To be eligible for the bonus points offer, you cannot hold or have held a Westpac rewards card in the previous 12 months.
  • Residency. This card is available to permanent Australian residents.

Card benefits

  • Bonus points. You can earn a total of 75,000 bonus Qantas Points with this bundle offer. When you apply by 31 March 2020 and spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 90 days of approval with your Mastercard, you'll get 60,000 bonus Qantas points. If you meet the same spend requirement with your Amex, you'll earn another 15,000 bonus Qantas Points. Your bonus points will be credited to your account within 12 weeks of meeting the spend requirement.
  • Discounted first year annual fee. Apply by 31 March 2020 and save $49 with a discounted annual fee of $200 in the first year (reverts to $249 p.a. thereafter).
  • Standard earn rates. When you spend with the Mastercard, you'll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent. On the American Express, you'll earn 1.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent on purchases in a foreign currency, 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent in Australia as well as 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent on government transactions. You can redeem your points for flights with Qantas and partnered airlines, accommodation, products from the Qantas Store and more.

Rates & fees

  • Annual fee. Outside of any promotions, this bundle charges a combined standard annual fee of $249 p.a. It breaks down to a $150 annual fee for the Mastercard, $49 for the American Express and a $50 Qantas rewards fee.
  • Purchase interest rate. The Mastercard charges a variable purchase interest rate of 20.49% p.a. and the American Express charges 20.24% p.a.

      Hi Rosie,

Thank you for getting in touch with finder.

Please note that with this card, you’ll earn Qantas FF bonus points as long as you meet the eligibility criteria. Your Qantas FF points will not expire as long as you earn or use these through your Frequent Flyer account at least once every 18 months. You may request to close your credit card account at any time. Keep in mind that every credit applications you have whether approved or not will be listed as a credit enquiry. The more enquiries you have in a short period of time can have a negative impact on your credit score.

      I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any other enquiries.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

      Cheers,
      Jeni

I am keen on getting this card.

If I pay my bills (phone, electricity and gas) would they count towards earning points?

      Hi –,

Thank you for reaching out to finder.

Yes you may earn points if you pay your bills as long as the payment is not a BPAY payments; i.e. bill payments and other payments made through the BPAY® Electronic Payments Scheme. Hope this helps!

Hi, I have a Westpac card but as a supplementary rather than primary card holder. Do you think that means I’m not eligible for this offer or am I?

      November 13, 2018

      Hi Josh,

Thanks for getting in touch! As a supplementary cardholder, your spending activities in the card count for the primary cardholder. This means no record is registered under you. Therefore, you are eligible for the offer when you apply as a primary cardholder. Hope this helps! Feel free to message again if you have further questions, we’re on standby.

      Cheers,
      Nikki
