Can Amazon Australia deliver your groceries more cheaply than Coles or Woolworths?
Amazon Australia could be the next household name for groceries.
When you think of your weekly grocery shopping trip, you probably don't envision shopping on Amazon... but perhaps you should. Although Amazon is known best for its range of books, white goods and assorted electronics, it's a strong contender when it comes to buying your groceries cheaply.
Amazon is officially live in Australia now, so we've scoped out whether or not it could actually be more affordable to purchase your household goods there instead of a major retailer like Woolworths or Coles. The retailer hasn't launched its Prime service, so that will definitely affect the way that shoppers choose to order.
Any way to minimise costs is always a bonus when it comes to groceries – especially if you've got young ones demanding attention (or sweets).
In order to test it out, we've compared the cost of purchasing and shipping a simple two-pack of soothers (pacifiers/dummies) for your baby – given that we knew from previously revealed categories that Amazon would have a pretty well stocked baby section – and let's be real, we're betting a lot of young families will be using the service.
To be precise, the product we're comparing is a two-pack of baby soothers from the brand AVENT, for babies aged 6-18 months. We chose this product in order to test out whether smaller product weight or size has any impact on the cost. We also checked the delivery costs for both Sydney and Melbourne CBDs, as we know that Amazon has centres in these locations.
Here's how pricing for a two-pack of baby soothers compares:
|Retailer||Purchase Price converted to AUD||Shipping Price (Sydney)||Shipping Price (Melbourne)||Total price||Amazon Australia price difference|
|Amazon Australia||$20.99||Free (on total orders over $49) or $5.99||Free (on total orders over $49) or $5.99||$20.99 - $26.98||$0.00|
|Amazon US||$5.40||$5.75 + any import fees||$5.75 + any import fees||$11.15 + any import fees||($9.84) - (15.83)|
|Woolworths||$12.50||$11.00||$11.00||$23.50||$2.51 - ($3.48)|
|Coles||$11||$4-$14 (Depending on time of day. Minimum order value $50)||$6-$18 (Depending on time of day. Minimum order value $50)||$15.00-$29.00 (excl. mandatory minimum order cost)||($5.99) - ($2.02)|
When it comes down to it, free shipping doesn't always equate to a cheaper overall cost. Woolworths' flat rate shipping costs are definitely clearer and are easier to use for first-time customers, but Coles do offer free shipping on your first order if you purchase over $100 worth of products.
If you've got your heart set on a brand, especially if it's for your kids, it's important to compare all over. Although Amazon Australia may be competitive, finding out the right product and retailer for you can make all the difference.
