Amazon Prime Video arrives on Apple TV

Alex Kidman 7 December 2017 NEWS

Apple's streaming box just gained another subscription video service while Amazon gets ready to lose access to YouTube on its own Fire TV platform.

It's been a busy week for Amazon in terms of launches, with the retail giant's rather soft Australian launch being the star act. However Amazon's not done with the launches this week just yet.

Amazon has announced that its Amazon Prime Video streaming service is now available to owners of the Apple TV 4K and Apple TV 4th generation, although it's not clear whether owners of earlier Apple TV generations will see it appear as a channel choice.

The Amazon Prime Video app requires a subscription to the service to operate and works with Apple's inbuilt universal search for the 4th Generation and 4K versions of the Apple TV set-top box.

Apple and Amazon had been at loggerheads on the issue of Amazon Prime TV support earlier in the year, with Amazon going so far as to pull the Apple TV from its US storefront, citing potential customer confusion as the reason why. With the app now launched, it will presumably re-appear, although there's no obvious sign of it on the Australian arm of Amazon just yet.

The launch comes just in time for the second season of Amazon's flagship original programme, The Grand Tour, which will launch on Amazon Prime Video on Friday.

However, Amazon still has streaming battles to fight, with Google announcing this week that it will pull YouTube support from Amazon's Fire TV platform entirely from 1 January 2018. Google isn't happy that Amazon isn't listing Nest (a Google/Alphabet owned company) devices on its US storefront, and had earlier dropped access for Amazon's Echo Show platform before announcing this week that it would remove access for Fire TV owners as well.

Right now, owners of Fire TV devices are met with warning screens letting them know that access will shortly be restricted, although here in Australia the only available Fire TV device is the $69 Fire TV Basic which only started shipping this week.
