Eddie Murphy must have known he was wading into dangerous territory when he signed on for a sequel of his classic 1988 film, Coming to America. There is a seemingly endless production line of remakes and sequels these days from studios desperate for another hit film.

Countless fans of the original movie must surely have asked themselves the same question. There has been excitement surrounding a return to the kingdom of Zamunda since it was confirmed back in 2017. But there has also been trepidation over whether it will tarnish the legacy of the original.

But from this writer's perspective, those fans can breathe easy. While it would be virtually impossible for it to reach the same levels of fun and humour as the first film, it proves a worthy homage that will appease most viewers.

The music, dance routines and elaborate costumes return in a movie that is set predominantly in the fictional African country, rather than New York. It also manages to neatly splice in footage of the original film.

In terms of the storyline, Prince Akeem (Murphy) ascends to become king following the passing of his father, played once again by the legendary James Earl Jones. Akeem now has three daughters with wife Lisa, with Shari Headley also returning to her role.

However, Zamunda only allows male heirs and it soon comes to light that Akeem may have a previously unknown son. We'll leave it there in terms of the plot.

Wesley Snipes plays a key figure, while fans will also note the appearance of some Saturday Night Live cast members, the show where Murphy rocketed to superstardom way back in the early 80s.

One of the most enjoyable elements of the first movie was the number of characters played by Murphy and co-star Arsenio Hall. The old men at the barbershop, Reverend Brown and the unforgettable Randy Jackson all make solid comebacks.

While some of the jokes are hit and miss and the originality of the first script could never be matched, by the end of the movie we think most fans will be satisfied this second time around was worth the ride.
