Amazon is bringing the Echo Spot to Australia

Amazon's popular smart speaker line gets an upgrade with a compact screen and a front-facing camera.

Amazon's Echo line of smart speakers has found plenty of success here in Australia, finally arriving on our shores back in February with the launch of the standard Echo, the smaller Echo Dot and the premium Echo Plus. Alongside the three devices came a wealth of Australian-made skills for Amazon's virtual assistant Alexa, providing hands-free access to a wide range of home-grown banking, entertainment and smart home services.

Today, Amazon has announced that it's expanding the Echo family Down Under with the addition of the Echo Spot. Packing a 2.5-inch screen, the Echo Spot combines all the functionality of the regular Echo smart speaker with a bunch of new visually-focused features like the ability to watch video flash briefings from popular news outlets like FOX Sports and ABC, view shopping lists and calendar event, and place video calls to any family and friends with their own Echo Spot or the Alexa app.

Along with the distinctly-shaped circular screen, the Echo Spot includes a four-microphone array utilising far-field technology – essentially, this allows the Echo Spot to pick up your voice even from other rooms. It also features enhanced noise cancellation which Amazon promises can register your voice commands even if you're playing music through the Echo Spot's built-in 2W speaker.

For music buffs, the Echo Spot also supports connecting to more-powerful external speakers over Bluetooth or through the integrated 3.5mm stereo jack. As with other Echo devices, the Echo Spot is compatible with a wide range of music streaming services like Spotify, Amazon Music Unlimited, iHeartRadio and Deezer.

"Echo Spot combines the popular small design of Echo Dot with the added benefit of a display, and the features you love about Alexa into a stylish and compact device," said Sylvia Ding, Country Manager for Alexa Australia and New Zealand. "We think customers in Australia will find lots of places for Echo Spot in their homes."

Pricing for the Echo Spot is surprisingly affordable relative to other Echo devices, with a launch price tag of $199. Pre-orders for the device are live as of right now, and Amazon plans to start shipping the device to customers next week on Thursday 26 April.
