AMAZON AUSTRALIA LAUNCHES: Full range, pricing and shipping details
Clothing, electronics and beauty take centre stage as the online shopping giant finally arrives down under. Here's what you'll pay and what you can buy.
Amazon Australia has finally launched its Australian operation, with its site revamping this morning to show off dozens of new departments shipping directly to Australians. A banner on the site reads simply: "Now delivering".
The list of areas Amazon is now operating in Australia matches the categories previously revealed by finder as being planned for the local launch. Clothing, electronics, toys and beauty are all given prominent spots on the revamped homepage.
Amazon's own in-house brand AmazonBasics is also available, as predicted. AmazonBasics products on sale include HDMI, USB and audio cables, laptop cases and backpacks. However, Amazon's Echo speaker isn't expected until next year.
What is Amazon charging for shipping?
Bad news for shopaholics: as expected, Amazon hasn't launched with its Prime delivery service. A note on the site says that Prime delivery, which offers free shipping in return for an annual fee, will be "coming in the future", but doesn't specify a timeframe.
That said, its postage costs are quite competitive. If you spend more than $49, you qualify for free delivery, and you can pay extra for faster delivery. Here's what Amazon is charging for products it is selling itself:
|Location||Priority speed||Priority cost||Expedited speed||Expedited cost||Free delivery speed||Cost|
|Sydney||1 business day||$9.99||2-3 business days||$5.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|Melbourne||1 business day||$9.99||2-3 business days||$5.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|Brisbane||1 business day||$9.99||2-3 business days||$5.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|Adelaide||1 business day||$9.99||2-3 business days||$5.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|Canberra||1 business day||$9.99||2-3 business days||$5.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|Perth||1-2 business days||$11.99||2-3 business days||$7.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|Major cities in NSW, VIC, SA||1-2 business days||$11.99||2-3 business days||$7.99||3-7 business days||Free for orders $49+|
|All other areas||1-3 business days||$19.99||3-7 business days||$9.99||7-10 business days||Free for orders $49+|
Products sold via Marketplace Sellers will have different rates, as those sellers can set their own postage fees. The majority of the products being sold through the site appear to be through third-party sellers right now, but that's likely to change in the coming weeks.
Amazon began experimenting with adding in Marketplace Sellers in Australia a fortnight ago, but despite rumours didn't launch in time for the Black Friday sales. Its launch today means it will still be able to pick up a healthy chunk of the Christmas shopping market.
