Amazon Australia didn't launch for Black Friday. So, what's next?

Despite rumours swirling that Amazon Australia would be up and running for Black Friday, the site still appears to only offer Kindle Books for most users. In addition to other publications, finder predicted a Black Friday launch given that this is one of the biggest days for Amazon in other markets.

However, despite an email sent out to a select group of Amazon Marketplace sellers informing them that the site would soft launch on Thursday 23 November at 2pm AEST, Amazon Australia failed to be accessible for most users. There were a few individuals on Twitter claiming to have made purchases through the Amazon Australia site but none of these claims have yet been confirmed.

A few key signs yesterday suggested that we might see a Black Friday launch - the "everything else" category on Amazon Australia is now populated with 27 pages of items and confirmed brands with images and prices, but any attempt to add them to cart sends you straight back to the homepage. Also, an Amazon sellers group on Facebook showed a screenshot of the list of categories that Australians would see on the local version of the site.

Despite this, for most Amazon was still a no-show. So what's next?

When is Amazon Australia launching?

Well one of the latest theories suggests that Amazon Australia will actually launch on 30 November - one week after the seller marketplace was due to go live. Although this is just speculation, it seems plausible that Amazon Australia would soft launch and then use a week to iron out any issues and officially launch seven days later.

Another theory suggests that Amazon Australia won't "launch" in a classic fashion at all. Rather Amazon Australia will slowly populate and slowly roll out functionality to groups of customers. This slow growth theory has merit given that some people claim to have access to the site already - although these reports remain unconfirmed.

All we really know is that Amazon Australia has confirmed to be up and running before Christmas in Australia. So we will see a 2017 launch but maybe it won't be the launch we expected.
