Overview
The Alfa Romeo Stelvio is achingly beautiful, more so than its rivals. Journalists said this was the SUV to go for if you enjoy driving, with plenty of revvy engine options. If you want to ferry your kids around in a crazy fast SUV, the Quadrifoglio has a Ferrari-developed powertrain and is said to be a lot of fun to own. Why would you go for the Alfa over its rivals? Italian styling, a high-level of safety assists and an SUV that's actually exciting!Website | Pros | Cons | Notable quote |

Car Advice |
|
| "It has the same snags as its cheaper brethren, namely the cabin fit-and-finish and marginal practicality, but as an exercise in instilling some fire and passion into the SUV market, it succeeds remarkably well." |
CarsGuide |
|
| "Yes, it's an Italian car, so it might not turn out to be quite as well built as an Audi, Benz or BMW, but it will definitely make you smile more often. Particularly when you look at it." |
Drive |
|
| "While that makes it less appealing to those who just want family transport, it makes it very tempting to those looking to escape boring and sensible in favour of something exciting and stylish." |
Motoring |
|
| "To that extent, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio is highly acceptable as a daily driver. After some acclimatisation, practically anyone can hop in and drive it sedately to the shopping centre or the local schools." |
Engine and performance
There are three engine options for the Stelvio, a 2.0-litre petrol engine, a 2.2-litre diesel block and a 2.9-litre bi-turbo petrol. Unlike many other manufacturers, Alfa Romeo also offers the same engines in various states of tuning.
Alfa Romeo 2.0-litre turbo petrol
Alfa offers the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol in the Stelvio, the Stelvio First Edition and the Ti. This engine is known as the FCA Global Medium Engine and you'll also see it used in other FCA group cars like the Jeep Cherokee and Alfa Romeo Giulia.
For the Stelvio and Stelvio First Edition, Alfa sets the power to 148kW@5,250rpm, while torque sits around 330Nm@1,750rpm. In the Ti model though, the dials are turned up to 11, where the engine makes 206kW@5,250rpm. Torque rises to 400Nm@2,250rpm.
Alfa Romeo 2.2-litre turbo diesel
Another engine commonly deployed in sister-group cars like the Giulia and Jeep Cherokee, this diesel is good for 154kW@3,750rpm, while torque measures a very healthy 470Nm. This model weighs in at 1,620kg, which is 200kgs lighter than some of its competitors.
Alfa Romeo 2.9-litre bi-turbo
Finally, for the hotter spec Stelvio Quadrifoglio and Quadrifoglio NRING, Alfa Romeo approached former FCA family member, Ferrari. A V8 version of this block is used in vehicles like the Ferrari 488 and SF90 Stradale. It's also been used under the bonnet of Maseratis. One major difference though, in the Alfa, it's a V6.
Power figures are very impressive, at 6,500 revs, you'll have 375kW coursing through the driveline. Torque is rated at 600Nm across a nice and wide band, 2,500-5,000rpm.
Alfa Romeo Stelvio transmission
Alfa Romeo sources its gearboxes from ZF, a respected and established transmission builder. The eight-speed box is rated for high torque, up to 700/750 depending on the specific variant utilised. It also features manual shifting paddles. The Q4 drivetrain system ordinarily operates as a RWD, but when needed, transmits up to 50% of the torque to the front axle.
Car reviewers' impressions of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio engine and gearbox combo
If you're buying the Stelvio as a family car or a daily driver, motoring experts tended to favour the 2.2-litre diesel model. Because it has more power and additional torque (that peaks at a lower rate of revs) than the lower-end petrol models, they found it more likeable. It also helps that this model is the most frugal of the Stelvio range.
The petrol engines from the base Stelvio and Ti models were both highly appraised too. Reviewers tended to lean towards the more powerful tuning of the Ti, saying it was a lot more fun to drive. Ti models do also have a longer spec sheet.
Talking about the Quadrifoglio SUV, it's fair to say reviewers gushed about the engine and transmission. Around the track, it was labelled a beast, with almost unreal levels of grip and a crisp response. In ordinary road driving, reviewers said you can muzzle the animal to soften it around the edges. You do this by using a rotary drive mode switcher. Obviously, it's still going to have unrelenting suspension compared to a luxury sedan, but most testers said it was very useable even with its Ferrari-derived engine. As you can imagine, journalists were astounded by the insanely quick acceleration, with the car giving them that heavy-stomach feeling you get when riding a roller coaster.
In terms of the gearbox, all the journos said it changed gear intelligently and crisply and it didn't search around for gears too much. That makes sense, as this eight-speed transmission is widely used by many different car manufacturers.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio fuel economy
The Green Vehicle Guide has fuel usage figures for each of the Stelvio engine options.
2.0-litre turbocharged petrol
We used the government's Green Vehicle Guide website for our fuel-usage statistics. Alfa's 2.0-litre petrol comes in two different engine tunes. In both 148kW and 206kW guise, it claims the following:
- Combined: 7.0L/100km
- Urban: 8.9L/100km
- Extra-urban: 5.9L/100km
In this configuration, if you travelled 14,000km per year, you'd spend $1,754 at the petrol stations. That's based on approximately 66% town driving.
2.2-litre turbocharged diesel
As the most frugal Stelvio, the 2.2-litre diesel claims to use the following:
- Combined: 4.8L/100km
- Urban: 5.5L/100km
- Extra-urban: 4.4L/100km
Taking into account these light fuel use figures, the Green Vehicle Guide suggests that based on the above usage statistics (14,000km driving, two-thirds of which were accumulated in built-up areas), your yearly fuel bill would be around $1,069.
2.9-litre bi-turbo V6 petrol
The powertrain of choice for Alfa's Stelvio Quadrifoglio has a larger capacity and produces more power. As a trade-off, it claims to use the following:
- Combined: 10.2L/100km
- Urban: 13.6L/100km
- Extra-urban: 8.2L/100km
Manufacturers have to put their vehicles through a stringent test in order to determine fuel economy figures. Because this test has set procedures designed to minimise result variations, it doesn't accurately depict real-world fuel usage. Traffic conditions, the weather, vehicle maintenance, tyre pressures and even the driver's style can all impact on fuel burn on public roads. Consequently, you should use the figures above as a comparison.
It is not uncommon for reviewers to record dramatically increased fuel usage than the brochure supplied digits. Only one outlet complained about what they thought amounted to high fuel usage, especially when idling. One writer pointed out you obviously have to use your right foot wisely to achieve better fuel efficiency, so perhaps the other reviewer was driving the car in a spirited, heavy-footed manner.
Handling
Alfa Romeo is a legendary sports car designer, and journalists were expecting a lot from the Stelvio SUV. It would appear they weren't left wanting.
The Stelvio's taut handling attracted lots of praise. The ride was likened to something more like a sedan or performance hatch, with the Stelvio apparently handling in a completely anti-typical way for a vehicle of its class and size. A couple of writers noted how this car made them want to go for a drive in the country, merely for the fun of it. Somehow, judging by the reviews, Alfa Romeo engineers appear to have mitigated body roll, created a responsive steering set-up and a car that genuinely excited reviewers. That's quite a rare thing to observe, especially from an SUV.
That doesn't mean it's a perfect riding car though – in reality, no car ever is. Most of the reviewers said that you really needed the adaptive suspension package for the dynamic handling they experienced. Even in standard form, the handling characteristics are best summarised as agile, spry and light-footed.
Interior and features
Alfa equips the Stelvio to a very competitive level of specification.
All models benefit from active driver safety assists, including forward collision warning, AEB, lane departure warnings, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, reversing camera with dynamic gridlines, dusk-sensing auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, both front and rear parking aids, tyre pressure monitoring and hill descent control. It's a good complement of tech – one that is rapidly becoming the accepted standard level of safety equipment for a modern vehicle.
For the more costly Ti model, you'll also receive active cruise control.
Comfort and convenience wise, Stelvios have a high level of equipment. There's dual-zone climate control with rear air vents, keyless entry, a power tailgate, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (except on First Edition models), a large 8.8-inch infotainment display with 3D navigation, digital radio, a selection of USB ports, a virtual instrument display, leather seats, power adjusting front seats and matting. Spending more, you'll get additional features like heated front seats and a steering wheel that's also warmed, ambient lighting, a 10-speaker surround system, sports seats and a sporty steering wheel, plus alloy pedals.
Reviewers described the Stelvio as very comfortable, with a pleasing specification. Some moaned about the user interface of the infotainment system but said they adapted to it quickly. For carrying a family and their luggage, a reviewer described the Stelvio as very practical and spacious. The seats are supposedly rather comfortable, with lumbar support as standard. One tester had some questions about the quality of the interior assembly, while another mentioned noise levels were heightened on the highway compared to some of its rivals.
Overall, the Stelvio passenger compartment comes across as a very comfortable and pleasant place to travel in, with an acceptable level of practicality.

Verdict
There's no denying the Stelvio's jaw-dropping good looks. It's perhaps the most excitingly styled SUV in its class. The Quadrifoglio performance model bowled over motoring journalists, and that's a pretty rare feat. The majority of testers said it was a car that made them want to go for a leisurely drive, just for the sheer enjoyment of it. Other testers recommended that if you're looking for an SUV to use for carting your family around, the Stelvio diesel is the most sensible. The Ti was said to be a fun option, but most suggested you need to go for the adaptive suspension system Alfa produces for engaging changes of direction.
