Alcatel 1X

There's growing demand these days for low-cost smartphones capable of keeping up with the needs of our modern connected society. One of the key players in this space is Alcatel, a brand that has built its legacy on affordability while still catering to the trends and fashion of the time. This approach has served the company well, and it's one that continues to inform the design of phones like the recent Alcatel 1X.

Sitting towards the lower end of Alcatel's 2018 smartphones, the Alcatel 1X aims for the sweet spot at the upper tier of ultra-cheap handsets. It does this by combining an 18:9 display with capable front and rear cameras plus support for Android Oreo Go, the offshoot of Android 8.0 designed specifically to maximise performance on low-power smartphones. Topped off with a very reasonable RRP of $129, this makes the Alcatel 1X a compelling choice for budget-conscious Aussies wanting the biggest bang for their buck.

Design

  • An 18:9 display at this price point is quite impressive
  • Soft-touch backing makes for a distinct look, though it won't be to everyone's tastes

Camera

  • An entirely adequate camera for such a cheap phone
  • Interpolation gives photos a slight bump up in quality over their raw megapixel count

Performance

  • Except sluggish performance from such cost-efficient components
  • Android Oreo Go does offset the weak hardware somewhat, though not entirely

Battery

  • Up to 26 hours of talk time and 547 hours on standby, according to Alcatel
  • Android Oreo Go can help extend battery life even further
