2020 AFL preview: Gold Coast Suns team guide

Gold Coast will be desperately hoping for signs of improvement in the 2020 AFL season. Can they avoid consecutive wooden spoons?

Gold Coast Suns

At a time when fellow expansion club Greater Western Sydney is looking to improve on a first grand final appearance, Gold Coast are still struggling to reach any semblance of competitiveness in the AFL.

Last season the Suns limped to just three wins to finish bottom of the table. Surprisingly, it was only the second wooden spoon in their history. The other occurred in 2011 when they finished last in a 17-team competition in their first season.

But with the top two picks in last year's AFL draft on board – 18-year-old duo and good mates Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson – there is again some encouragement for the future.

Gold Coast Suns history

The Suns' history has been short and mostly wretched, to put it bluntly. Brief moments of optimism have generally been replaced by brutal reality checks. Gold Coast have regularly found it difficult to attract or retain talent.

In Stuart Dew, they have an astute coach who is heading into his third season. If the current crop of players can buy in and commit to the cause, success may not be too far away. But that has been the key issue in the club's nine seasons in the AFL thus far.
